Hi !

How y'all doing ?

Question :

I am sure it's diabetic related.....
I get hot feet ! ( like today - maybe because it's been a little warm here in London ? ) My feet get slightly achey / swollen-ish -but it's not too bad, it just feels odd and annoying, not painful. I just hope doesn't worsen !

Anyway - do any of you experience this sort of thing ?
Is there a remedy ?- or does it just pass with time ? ( sugars adjusting ? - transient neuropathy ?)

Some of you I think you seem to suffer from COLD feet ? I seem to suffer from the opposite !!

I am mindful to wear comfy - not tight fitting shoes. Always have done. I've got wide feet. ( do I sound like a clambering dozy twerp saying that ?!)

Another thing - While I am here , now that my feet are more 'sensitive' - are there any shoe brands you can recommend - anyone ?
I am looking to get some soft fantastically comfortable wide fitting shoes ?!

Some shoes I've seen online look like slippers !!

Thanks again
Shoran.

Hi Shoran, have you had your feet checked lately? You should get a full check at least once a year to check for sensitivity, any problems and to check your pulses so you are getting a good blood supply. Are there any particular times of day or night you have the problem? I'm one of the people with cold feet, particularly at night, although they do warm up eventually, and I had cold feet before diabetes so probably not fair to lay the blame there! 🙂

Do you have any pain, or are your feet just hot? I can't really recommend any 'proper' shoes as I only ever wear training shoes, although when I worked in an office I had a pair of Doc Martens shoes that were very comfortable 🙂

Before I was diagnosed Shoran, I had the ‘burning feet syndrome’ and it was awful! It wasn’t pain so much as general discomfort, heat and sensitivity. Once my levels were on an even keel, the problems eased considerably but I’d still struggle with certain shoes. The trouble with needing wide fitting shoes is the tendency to go up a size and that’s means the feet rub forward exacerbating the burning feeling.

There are online shoe companies specialising in very wide fitting shoes often without seams that suit people with diabeties and other foot and circulatory issues. They’re not always the most stylish however but comfort comes first.
Try Cosyfeet, Wider Shoes, Hotter and the JD Williams catalogue has wide fitting shoes. Good luck.

Northerner, Amigo,

Great - thanks for getting in touch.

My feet were checked probably about 2 months ago- I'll perhaps speak to my nurse again soon. It's more of a sensitivity thing, uncomfortable without it being outright painful. Just not very pleasant - a bit annoying. I have been pretty strict with my diet- hence 'good' control of blood sugars, so am surprised now 4.5 months after diagnosed I am getting this hot feet thing, would if anything have expected it to have happened earlier on . Maybe these things happen and the body does take that long to catch up and adjust ?

I'll check out the shoes. Nice one.

Cheers,

Shoran.

Northerner,

The hot feet thing is for me more pronounced usually toward the end of the day....

I think these things can take quite a while to manifest themselves - I remember getting some transient neuropathy effects when I was about 6 months in. Also, even though I was diagnosed at the beginning of quite a hot summer, I actually suffered from chilblains for the first time since childhood! 😱 People can experience quite disparate symptoms - some get pain, some numbness, some sensitivity, some hot, some cold!

Hopefully, things will ease for you before too long 🙂
