Can anyone give me a way of making yoghurt without buying a yoghurt maker. I haven't seen a yoghurt maker for ages, and want to experiment a bit with different things.

Rose Elliot's "Your Very Good Health" has a recipe that I've made with success using my airing cupboard

Thanks, I'll see if I cab get hold of a copy. SHouldn't be too hard since I work in very large reference library

Thanks, I have reccomended book next to me on my desk, and have orderd a copy from amazon along with a couple of low carb vegetarian cook books by same author

I think you'll enjoy them - I've always found her recipes work very well and like the results even though I'm not vegetarian.

there is brand of yogurt from New zealand called Easiyo, that uses something resmebling a flask but is not electric. they do lots of differnet flavours.

Thanks everyone I am now ready to experiment...

I seem to remember that you can make it in a Vaume flask, warm flask, warm milk plus a spoon full of natual yoghurt leave it and out comes fresh youghurt, google and see if you can find it.

Here's what I do:

Heat a pint of milk (450ml) in a saucepan over a low heat until it begins to boil. Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the milk into a clean vacuum flask then set it aside to cool until it is just lukewarm. Add 2 tablespoons of live yoghurt and stir gently, then seal the flask. Leave for 8-10 hours to set and, once set, store in the fridge for up to three days. You can use a heatproof jar if you don't have a vacuum flask, just cover it while the yoghurt sets. Keep a couple of tablespoons of the first batch to make the next and so on.

I use the Robert Wiseman 1% fat milk, or the Co-op version and add fruit or use it for cooking as needed.
