Does anybody else make their own bread? I was sick to death with the bread we were buying from the supermarkets. Reading the long, long list of added bits and preservatives etc. I bought a breadmaker a year ago and we havnt looked back since, and saved a packet too. I would be interested in any body else's comments. AM.

....does it spike? how is the carb count compared to supermarket bought stuff?

I moved this thread so it won't get lost in the flood of general stuff.

Yes, I make my own bread in a bread maker. I don't eat a lot of it so being able to make a small loaf is a plus. I know what goes in it as well, I rarely buy bread these days. I usually make wholegrain bread and haven't had any spikes from it.

Oo How I miss home made bread !

I always made our bread - using my machine and by hand - until K started carb counting. Then it was easier to buy Pre sliced stuff for her so stopped making it.:(

Perhaps now we are old hands at carb counting I will sit down and work out the carbs in my fave recipes - not sure she will be keen on having to weigh every slice but I will come up with an 'average' perhaps.

Hmmm thinking cap on...

Phill65, I have no idea of the carb count. I am counting 1 slice home made same as 2 slices wholemeal. I know exactly whats gone into my bread and the taste is like proper bread of years ago. I always bake a granary loaf as its very tasty. The cost is about 45p a loaf, I also make cakes and I can make jam too. Cutting with a bread knife takes a bit of getting used too. But the smell....mmm

Tip for cutting homemade bread:

Use an electric kitchen carving knife,
it's easiest if you turn the loaf on it's side rather than cutting through the top crust first.

I make a lot of my own bread, besides being a type 2 Diabetic I'm also a Coeliac so I need to use a combination of unusual Gluten Free flours.

I usually use Alinsons Granary seed and grain flour (1kg packs) to make buns for Aberdeen Angus matured burgers (Costco). My bread machine has been sitting in the garage for years. Doing by hand is good exercise.

Use a bread machine here too, usually do a 50/50 wholemeal/white flour mix. It works out at around 30 carbs for a thick slice. Have been using it for about 8 years now and like it v.much

i use a breadmaker now and then because i was getting fed up of shop bread although for now we like the hovis best of both... i make wholemeal bread when i do it and it is lovely not noticed a spike as such but do have to think of it as twice as much as normal bread but thats because i like it chunky when its home made

David H, was wondering if you had any good recipies for gluten free bread that you would be willing to share, we used to make all of our own bread before my husban became a coeliac but never found any good breads after that. I do own a bread maker but also very happy to do it by hand as well

I am tinkering with a recipe for an unorthodox seeded brown, Gluten, Wheat, Dairy, Soy, Yeast free bread not quite right yet!

I'm away for a few days break but will post a few recipes for you to try when I get back (all original) might even be able to find a few photos (devised years ago)

I use a bread machine too but I'm ashamed to admit I have never carb counted it. Used to just make it for the husband but my T1 son has just started eating it too.

I mix wholemeal and white flour, and add loads of seeds. Normally pumpkin, sunflower seeds, linseed, sesame and if I can get them, poppy seeds too (yum yum). My son turns his nose up at manufactured brown/wholemeal/seeded bread, but will eat this no problems whatsoever. It's lovely - especially hot straight out of the machine!

The recipe book that came with my bread machine has some gluten free recipes - when I am up later I will have a look and write them on here. I haven't ever tried them though.

Incidentally, I make pizza dough in it too. Truly wonderful pizzas!

I'm a sucker for the wrights mixes!

if you're worried about portion sizing - you can make small-medium sized rolls..

...and have 2 or 3 of them.. :-D

.....mmmmm...there lies the problem! I love the smell of freshly baked bread...and I have no willpower!...the bread maker might have to stay in the cupboard...or maybe it can come out to play at the weekend! :D
