Hello. I wonder if anyone has any ideas or advice. Since I went on a 8 day camping holiday in Wales (I'm back now for a couple of days) I've had high readings. Even after correction doses, I saw much smaller reductions than usual. e.g. after a reading of 21 and correction dose of 3 units, I would find it reduced to around 17 only! My controll is now terrible - last 7 days average is 15.7!

Could your insulin have become compromised somehow? Must admit this has never happened to me but might be worth changing to a new pen/cartridge just in case. Could you be coming down with a cold or something?

I did think of it and changed to a new pen. Don't know if coming down with cold or something. Cant feel anything but was wondering as well...

Hi Pink Rose, It doesn’t happen to me very often thank god but I would say your correction of 3 units when your at 21 may be a little low, 3 units brought you down by 4 mmol so 8 or 9 units might get you back to single figures and then you can get back in control with your normal regimen

It is usual for corrections to be less effective when your BG levels are very high because you become more insulin resistant and therefore need more but it is always best to be conservative.
Since you are relatively newly diagnosed, I would wonder if it is your honeymoon period coming to an end and you need to increase your basal insulin to cover it. Which basal are you using and how much?
I think it would be wise to get in touch with your nurse and discuss it with them. Hopefully you are getting negative or low tests for ketones.

Levemir for basal insulin. 8 units in the morning and 8 units at night. yes, ketones at 0.1 so ok there.

Good that you haven't got ketones to worry about. I would speak to your nurse asap with levels going that high as I think it is likely that your honeymoon period is coming to an end and you need more basal.
I know we are all different but I was on a similar dose of Levemir for the first 6 months and then I needed pretty much to double my daytime Levemir to cope with my new basal needs. It happened over a period of a few weeks, where I had to just steadily increase the dose until my levels balanced and settled down again.

Let us know what your DSN suggests @Pink Rose 🙂

Hope you have a lovely time camping!

Hi Here's an update. Please let me know what you think...
I was corresponding with my DSN via email. First she suggested that I change to new insulin pens - which I already had done - and that I make sure not to inject into fatty lumps - which I try to do by moving around injection sites...
Then I mentioned that I have a cracked tooth and infected gums underneath. The tooth needs extraction. the dentist said that if I'm in severe pain she will prescribe antibiotics. I asked the DSN whether I should get the antibiotics - even without severe pain - because of the diabetes. The DSN said that I should take it and she thinks that the infection may be the reason for the raised BG levels.
I took the antibiotics from the chemist today and let's see what will happen in the next few days.....
