Relationship to Diabetes

Hi I was diagnosed beginning of January I had been pre diabetic for years and my mum has been diabetic for years both type 2.
I am 57 have underactive thyroid which is playing up I’m already on 175mg and they are re testing everything on 13th Feb and if still the same I ave to take 200mg which is the highest you can take, I have high blood pressure and cholesterol , when I saw the diabetic nurse she said they need to get my blood pressure and thyroid under control. Anyone else in similar situation?
Ive started cutting down on carbs , I’ve been looking at Freshwell which looks really good.

Really sorry to hear about the issues you’ve been experiencing with your health.

It’s common to have coexisting health conditions so it’s good to hear that your nurse is taking it all into consideration.

I’d have a good chat with your nurse re diet too as there may be a plan of way of thinking that can help with a few of your needs.

Do feel free to do a search on the site for the individual additional health needs to get an idea of how others are managing.
 
Hi and welcome.

Many people find low carb reduces BP as well as BG levels. Your thyroid situation may well also improve. I found a whole host of health conditions improved or vanished as a result of cutting my carbs. It has been a bit of a revelation! The Freshwell guidance is good if you fancy giving that a go.
 
Thank you both for replying , I’ve seen a different nurse about food etc which was good advice, I’m going to try Freshwell , I really like the look of some recipes just need to buy the almond and coconut flours , I’ve found a place online or does anyone know what shops sell it .
 
Its difficult, an underactive thyroid can cause multiple problems.
However, you seem to have good NHS care ongoing, I would work with them to address all your conditions, and ask if they can refer you to a dietician to work out a way to cover everything.

Almond and coconut are very calorific, and may not help if you are actively trying to lose weight, but great if you need to gain.

Almond flour is really just ground almonds, if you want it finer then you can just blitz it a bit more. H & B or Grape Tree or if you go to COSTCO they have them there.
I found following the principals in the Freshwell approach was successful and just all made sense.

Most supermarkets will sell almond flour as 'ground almonds' in the bakery section, and larger ones will stock coconut flour- you may want to keep later in freezer as you only use a bit at a time. As you use such small amounts coconut flour you may need a rather accurate scales- i recommend heston blumentals scales, very reliable!
I tried lupid flour and it wasn't nice, but the above flours are quite tasty, very blood sugar friendly, but high in fats. As i needed to gain weight, that wasn't a problem.
Ground hazelnuts make a nice muffin flour
 
Gram flour, ground chickpea, is another alternative.
It is flavoured, but good in the right circumstances.
 
Thank you everyone for your help and information, I might do calorie counting alongside the low carbs cos I need to lose weight as well and now I’ve been told not to have light things and to buy full fat stuff the last thing I need is too gain anymore.

I normally buy light, I am fairly low fat generally, and avoid saturated fats.
 
My diabetic nurse said it and the nurse I saw Monday about the type of foods , they both said a lot of light stuff have more sugars in them ie yoghurts , I read on Freshwell app that butter is better than low fat spread they have a swap idea on it .
I don’t eat a lot of bread and if I do I have warburtons seeded my diabetic nurse said that was fine but only have 1 slice , it’s all confusing at the moment try to get my head around it .

after doing weight watchers 20 odd years ago.

Yes, I don't touch full fat either.
Instead of mayo I use kefir or quark, a lot less calories.

That is actually very out of date.
It was true about ten years ago, but the big drive on cutting sugar means most things have had it taken out, nowadays they are around the same. Just check the nutritional info on the back.
Be careful on low carb sites, there is always a push for higher fat. Mostly I use olive oil, or one cal.
I found the best way for me was to simply pick out the bits that seems sensible from all diets, use my common sense, and find what suited me.

The high protein yoghurts or Kvarg deserts are quite good as they are both low carb and low fat.
One of the thoughts behind having full fat is that it helps you not to feel hungry so less likely to snack on high carb foods.
It is all a matter of personal taste whether you go for full fat and maybe have a smaller portion rather than reduced fat which if the flavour is not as good.

And would someone on a low carb high fat diet snack on high carb low fat snacks to feel full on?
It's more likely they'd pig out on more high fat food?
 
When eating low fat I was always conscious of needing to eat less as my weight increased relentlessly.
On a low carb full fat diet my weight reduced without me even thinking about it. I was totally fixated on getting normal blood glucose levels, and then my clothes started falling off - fortunately indoors and in private. The nurse I saw last time I needed a new prescription for Thyroxine was puzzled that I needed less as my thyroid failed decades ago - and she asked me to step on the scales. I said I did not want to know what I weighed, I have had too many battles about weight, but when putting in the numbers she remarked that I was 70lb down from the maximum they had for me.
On low carb high fat I don't need snacks, I am never hungry and I even forget to eat sometimes - I only eat twice a day anyway.
 
Hello everyone, I am pleased to join this community. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, trying to live a different life from that moment. Hope my experience would be useful for some.
