Hi all.

I have two questions.

Is there sugar free ice cream out there? Every summer I crave ice cream and I’m trying so hard to improve my HBA1C.

Also are Pringles a slow carb release? Say I was at 5.6 should I eat a couple then insulin or?

Sorry still a newbie

Welcome to the forum, sorry I can't answer specifically because as Type 2 I would be looking at the carbs in whatever I was going to have but you will have other considerations depending on what insulin you are taking and what you have been advised about carb counting so you can tailor your insulin dose.
Perhaps if you share a bit more about your diagnosis, how long and what insulin are you taking some of the Type 1 folk will help with your question.
It may be you don't really need a low sugar ice cream but what makes a good substitute is something like Greek yoghurt blitzed up with frozen berries and eaten immediately.

I had an idea on this.
I figured I can buy some ice lolly moulds. blend some fresh fruit with yogurt so the fruit juice sweetens the yogurt and freeze it in the lolly moulds.
Some of fruit (or all of it) can be crushed roughly with a fork rather then totally obliterated in a blender. Also if necessary some form of sweetener can be mixed in.

Ice cream is a frozen custard. You can make it very easily - I bought an icecream maker which is the ideal method.
Use eggs and cream to make custard, sweeten it and flavour it as required once it has cooled down, then whip it up and freeze it.
It can be done with a bowl put into the freezer, or using ice and salt in a close fitting outer container -- it needs to be close fitting to prevent it getting into the icecream. A splash of alcohol makes it softer - one of my favourites is rum and raising, but walnut and honey worked well - don't use a lot of honey as it seems to become more powerful when cold.

As a type 1 you can eat whatever you like so long as you take the appropriate amount of insulin. One scoop of vanilla is approx 10g carbs if you don't have the packet to check. Flavoured will be higher.
Do you have a CGM? that will show if your bolus ratio is good and keep you in the green so will not adversely affect your hba1c. Your time in range is a better indicator. You should aim for 70% TIR that will give you a nice hba1c.

I used to pig out on Franks but I was kidding myself. I could eat the entire tub. 😳

Rather than look for substitutes just have smaller portion if larger ones are issue, in time bolusing for foods like ice cream crisps will become much more simple, it all takes time learning these skills.

As long term type 1 always say that life is to he enjoyed & having foods you love is part of that enjoyment, denying yourself foods or looking for alternatives that are bland or not as tasty don't cut it for me & never has, know other type 1s here share same view so not alone by any means.

Just choose a normal good quality ice cream and bolus for the carbs @JordanC Same with the Pringles. When I was first diagnosed more than 30 years ago, ice cream was one of the first desserts I was given in hospital. Type 1s can eat pretty much all foods. The trick to Type 1 isn’t diet, it’s insulin. If you get a ‘bad’ result, it won’t be the food, it will be the insulin (wrong dose, wrong timing).

You should use glucose to treat a hypo, but yes, you can have a few Pringles as a top-up carb if you want.

I see this is your first post. When were you diagnosed with Type 1? What insulins do you take?
