Hi all, Mick here type2 diabetes , looking forward to reading post , currently on metformin .
Welcome to the forum. Are you prepared to share how long ago you were diagnosed and maybe the circumstances? I was asked to discuss my cholestral and discovered my annual blood test for hypertension was not tested for diabetes. I asked for a test and last June my hba1 c was 69. By December it was 44

Hi @MickDuke and welcome to the forum - there is a wealth of information on here, and don't be afraid to ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered a "silly" question

Hi Mick, welcome to the forum. Would you like to say a bit about your diagnosis, how long and what your HbA1C is as that will have an impact on how much work you will need to do to get back down to more normal levels. Metformin is usually the first medication along with dietary changes which will be prescribed. Diet is all important so were you advised about cutting down on all carbohydrates as well as just sugary foods as all carbs convert to glucose.
Even if you have been diagnosed some time your may find this link useful in directing your approach.

Welcome to the forum @MickDuke

How have you found the Metformin? It works well for the vast majority, but can give some people a bit of an upset stomach for a while, and others can’t tolerate it at all.

Have a good read around and you’ll see that there are a variety of different ways to manage diabetes used by different forum members.

Some focus on aiming for significant weight loss - especially weight carried around the abdomen / visceral fat around the organs. This is often a fairly short term very low calorie intervention like the 800 cal ‘Newcastle’ diet. Followed by a transition back to real food in moderate portions to maintain the lost weight.

Others aim primarily for blood glucose management with a long-term lower carb eating plan. Anything from moderately low carb (around 130g of total carbs a day), to much lower (say 50-70g a day) depending on what their body needs.

Good luck finding a system that works for you. 🙂

Welcome Mick. I picked up your other thread about metformin side effects. As others have mentioned your HbA1c results have a bearing on what medication, if any, you are prescribed.
My initial HbA1c was 165 so I started on medication immediately. Still work in progress getting my HbA1c down to 50 which is where the nurse would like it to be.
Although I am on medication I still watch my carb intake and try to exercise regularly. This has a noticeable effect on my blood sugars and I feel much better than I did a year ago.
