Hi everyone I'm new and just been diagnosed with type 2 diebetes I understand I have to change my diet however I also have a colostomy bag and what I have to eat with the diebetes I can eat with the colostomy what I can eat with the colostomy I can't eat with my diebetes I need help I've been told I need extra salt for my stoma but I know it's not good for my diebetes can anyone help please

Sorry to hear about your colostomy bag and the extra complexities it is adding to your diabetes management.

We have had a number of members over the years with a stoma, there are a number of threads here which you might find helpful


Low salt intake advice will be related to heart disease risk, and blood pressure. People with diabetes have a statistically higher risk of heart disease, and high blood pressure can also cause additional problems with fine blood vessels, alongside BPs impact on heart health.

It’s always tricky to balance the needs of multiple conditions, especially where one like diabetes has quite wide-reaching recommendations because of related risks and complications.

I think this is really something you will need to talk to your Drs about, who should be able to help you balance the varying requirements.

My (unqualified) suspicion would be that for your diabetes the primary thing to aim for will be glucose management, which will most significantly be impacted by the amount and types of carbohydrate you are eating - along with trying to keep your weight in a good place.

Hi @Wendy1905 You state those things as if they were facts. Have you tested then or researched them?
I ask because though we are all different, and my experience isn't the same as yours (I have/had Type 2 now in remission due to Low Carb and my brother and I both have MYH polyposis which he left too long before having a colonoscopy so he has a Stoma Bag).

My brother and (between us) find that:
1. There is no incompatibility between what a Type 2 diabetic (if they are trying for remission) should eat and what a patient with a Stoma bag can eat. Stoma patients need to avoid foods which are hard to digest and tend to pass right through the system - like sweet corn. T2's need to avoid sugars and starches (which of course includes sweet corn),but most meat, fish and low carb veg is good - just not too much fibre.
2. Low carb eating tends to reduce water retention and hence salt retention and blood pressure (if high in the first place). Thus many of us need to either come off blood pressure tablets, or if not taking them in the first place we eat additional electrolytes including sodium. Personally I use 'Lo salt' which is 2/3rds potassium and 1/3rd sodium plus magnesium glycinate for electrolytes since obviously I can't eat bananas for potassium any more.
3. The results of Dr David Unwin's patients suggest that salt is being blamed for high blood pressure when it is actually sugar which is the cause.
 
Thank you for your quick reply I have spoken to my doctor and he seemed at a loss I have not been asked to attend a diabetic clinic as yet I am going for an eye check I have spoken to someone who called me up I told him about my stoma and my eating dilemma all I was told is they didn't know and if I went to a meeting there may be someone there with the same condition but it would be better to research it on the internet but there seems to be so much info but thank you for your advice I have my stoma nurse coming on Thursday I will ask her again thank you
 
I am a bit puzzled about salt being bad for diabetes - I upped my salt intake at the start of the hot weather (I live on the south coast) and last night I had cramps again so I obviously need even more than a couple of small pinches.
I think some advice is given without any thought of logic or common sense. Being woken in the night with what feels like hooks tearing off your muscles is no joke. It certainly does me no good.
 
Thank you drummer I was told only a pinch of salt per day I understand the feeling of cramps at night I have suffered with the things a while now I also suffer with my heels I have lost the fat which cushions the heel my husband massage my feet each night he checks then to God bless him trying to work out the good and the bad for both stoma and diabetes gets harder each day he says we'll get there in the end being on this forum and the advice so far is reassuring and I thank everyone
