Hi , I had a bad fall yesterday and on top of small cuts on my hands and bruised feelings elsewhere I have a very nasty cut on my kneecap needing stitches etc.
My question is - does d make the healing process more worrying ? The nirse dealing with it said 'with diabetes your healing will be slower ' just wondered 🙂
Hello everyone 🙂 sorry not to have been around , had a traumatic time - mum died , left husband , buying flat in Sussex ! Things can only get better ? ? 🙂

Hi Ann, sorry to hear of all the heartache you have been through, and your fall, I hope the future is brighter for you 🙂

Diabetes can cause slower healing if blood sugar levels are higher than normal as it gives bacteria a better environment to thrive. I think even with good control healing can be slower as I have noticed when I get cuts from gardening adventures (my garden is an adventure that Ray Mears would shy away from 😱) Keep a close eye on the wound and try to keep your levels as steady as possible. I think the main problems come when a wound is not detected and treated which can lead to major infections (if control is poor), but you are aware of this and your knee is less vulnerable than your feet. Hope it heals well 🙂

p.s. good luck with the flat purchase 🙂

Thanks northerner 🙂 I am hoping that as it was medically treated it should be clean - fortunately my trousers remained in tact (. No idea how !!) so germs from the pavement couldn't get in - I hope !!

The flat is going through ok , he wants to move , as I do - just paperwork !!

Thanks 🙂

They do say this about healing. Personally I have never so far had any probs whatsoever - hosp were pretty gobsmacked when I had me hysterectomy actually - but I never expected any different. I may be labouring under a misapprehension or just lucky, never wanted to find that out for sure really !

Only things I've ever had go bad ways was firstly a horsefly bite over 30 years ago - there were several of us got bitten (at the end of a Cub Scout camp during Flag break) so they all got cleaned properly pretty soon thereafter - and all of us had the same prob - adults, children and only me diabetic.

The other time was some warty things right under me boob I had removed. I put that down to it being seriously hot and although I was told to keep it dry, that's utterly impossible right there, hence yeeuk.

(Must tell you bout that, I explained to doc what was happening and said 'I really don't like the look of it' he said nowt. So then I asked 'Do you want to have a look?' - and he burst out laughing and said 'Well if YOU don't like the look of it - why d'you think I will?' Cracked me up too. When we'd both finished having hysterics - he did - of course LOL)

What I always think is this, it's simple. If it doesn't heal as quick as I expect it to, or shows any signs of gunk or redness/hotness that wasn't there yesterday - on the phone to the doctors I go for a very speedy, No it MUST be today, it's very urgent as I'm diabetic and I have a wound that's festering, appointment. Speedy course of ABs and Melanin (are they?) dry dressings later and I've been as good as new.

Thanks .... Very useful info 🙂

Sorry things have been tough for you lately. Things will get better for you.

With D, things do take longer to heal. I have learned to take things easy and be patient, and when ever I have had anything wrong I have used the affirmation today i am better than I was yesterday, things are getting better day by day.

Thanks Caroline, nice positive thinking 🙂 !!

I've never had a problem with healing either. I also had a fall nearly three weeks ago 🙄 and ended up with a bruised and battered knee, but there isn't much to show for it now.:D

Probably the worst place to get injured (for slow healing) is the shin, as blood supply is poor. Knee caps aren't too bad - that's why they bleed pretty well.

So, as long as wound was well cleaned before stiching, it should be fine. Minor wound on hands tend to heal fairly quickly, and regular hand washing means infections are unlikely.

So, hope all heal smoothly - and your flat purchase goes well, too.

Thanks copepod, reassuring ! 🙂 thanks for good wishes about the flat too.... Fingers crossed it won't be long , I have bought a bed and settee so I can sleep and sit down... Oh, and a table. ( no chairs for that yet !!! ) 🙂

Thanks later , hope your injuries are ok now too 🙂

Thanks. Hope everything goes well for you.🙂
