Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to ask you for some advise! We are off to Egypt on the 19th June & I am really worried about Tummy Troubles 😱😱😱!
I have been watching the reviews of the Hotel we have booked & they are coming back with loads of negatives regarging people being put on drips etc. I have contacted First Choice half a dozen times in the last week but they are no help & say we can't change our Hotel or Destination! I am so worried that if I go down with a bad dose of Egyption Tummy will I have to go to Hospital? AI have only been diagnosed with Type 1 for just over 3 years & have travelled to Dom Rep/Greece/Australia with no probs at all but need to be prepared just in case. I have upgraded my Holiday Insurance so it covers us with no excess so I am well covered. Any tips would be very much apreciated.

Thanks in advance
Debx

hi ruby loo firstly as usual the travel agent where of no help , they ony seem very helpful when your handing them your cash , afterwards the care seems to dwindle , i would say dont panic dont let it ruin your hols , make sure you are aware of what food you are eating and know whats gone into it !
make sure you dont drink water from the tap, buy mineral water(also clean your teeth in this water as well and not from the tap), and dont eat in any restaurant, because they are not very clean.
you can ask in your hotel for good restaurants, they will indicate to you where to go , if you do happen to get an upset tummy you stock up on MOTILIUM in case of vomiting and plenty of RE-HYDRATION salts packets which are essential . If you are out of salt packets, flattened SEVEN UP/ LEMONADE will do as a
substitute

Lastly just enjoy your hols hope you have a good time x

good advice from Steff, especially about the water. try and stay hydrated it's really important.

Is the food going to be from the hotel or will you have to find your own restaurants?

I went to Tunisia last year with First Choice and almost everyone got some kind of stomach upset. We did but it didn't ruin our holiday, just had some loperamide and drank plenty of fluids.

revise your sick day rules just in case so you know how to keep on top of your blood sugars.

Hope you have a good time

Sorry no advice but Egypt! You lucky thing, it's one of my dream holidays! Hope it all goes well for you.

Thankyou for all your advise, we are going All inclusive & are quite away from Narma Bay so will probably be eating mostly at the Hotel. First Choice just don't want to know & won't listen to anything that I have found out from people returning! They even surgested that the negative reviews were from other hotels to put people off booking! Funny that, they said the Good reviews were the real ones! 🙄🙄🙄

I went to Egypt in April and I was worried too as it was my first holiday since diagnosis - but I was absolutely fine! Here are some tips:

Be sure to be absolutely rigid about only drinking bottled water. I even brushed my teeth with it, which amused my family greatly but I wasn't taking ANY chances!

Also be careful of ice cubes - if you're drinking bottled water but putting ice in it that was made from tap water, you may as well be drinking tap water! - Although hotels should know this and make sure their ice is made from purified water.

If you're concerned about the food in your hotel stick to cooked foods only. Sometimes in Egypt fresh fruit and veg has been known to cause upset tummies (if the crops have been irrigated with unclean water, for example).
I have to say I ate plenty of salads and fruits in my hotel, as I trusted their produce, but if I went anywhere else I only ate cooked things.

Have a wonderful time!

Hi,

The advice of only drinking bottled water and making sure it is sealed when it arrives is good. But also do not have ice with it!

The other area friends have advised to avoid are ice creams or ice lollies as these tend to cause upsets as well - while we're on hols it is nice to have a treat, just be careful.

Otherwise, no advice, except make sure your insurers know you're diabetic, any concerns I'd suggest DUK travel insurance as its specifically for diabetics, there are also other companies mentioned in other threads here. Hopefully the insurance will just turn out to be a wise waste of money!

Oh, and have a great time, don't forget the postcard! :D

Insurance

I got a quote for 2 of us (1 diabetic and 1 not) from DUK recently for a years cover which I think was about ?117.

Last night I managed to get a quote through the company that does the insurance through the bank I have my current account in. This was for about ?78 including diabetes cover so it pays to shop around (though I will be checking the paperwork very carefully when it arrives). 🙄

Hi Rubyloo. Lucky you, Egypt is great! When I went all/inc to Hurghada, the hotel was spotless, and I heard no reports of tummy upsets, but I still got one (very prone to them). I took the reps advice not to bother with Immodium, but to get local tablets from the pharmacist. They worked very well and it soon cleared up. Apparently Egyptian treatment beats Egyptian bugs better than Immodium. 3 day course cost about ?10.

Sometimes it may not be a bug that upsets your tum, but just the heat and different foods etc. Salads can often be a more risky choice than hot foods, though obviously DO NOT eat food from street vendors!! And very cold drinks when you are very hot can do it too.

I hope you have as good a time in Egypt as I had. Good luck!!

My latest copy of Balance has arrived - it contains a booklet on travel. Plus there was an advert in there for accu-chek site saying that has travel guides too that might be worth a look
