Just back from the doctors and have been put on Gliclazide. Does anyone else take this? Have heard that it makes weight gain as a side effect.
Pros and cons of it??

Also take metformin (4 tablets a day) and Sitagliptin (1 tablet a day)

Any comments appreciated
David

I've not gained weight. That is however the only pro I can think of...

For me its a horrible medication, can't control my levels one day its good the next its hypo city and that's eating the same food.

I have even vastly reduced what glic I take now on 1/2 what I started on, If I don't take it my levels go high. :(

As for weight gain, I have put on 8 kilos in a few months :( really brassed off with that and it makes me feel constantly hungry. :(

Now seeing a health trainer and in 2 weeks have managed to lose 11 lbs.

I really wanted to go on victozia as that reacts to how you eat rather than telling your pancreas to produce insulin willy nilly.

If you are not testing your BS get a meter and get the test strips on prescription, its a med that qualifies you to get test strips, though some docs will still not give them to you. DVLA will also require you to test before and during a trip every 2 hours though I have to reduce this to 1 1/2 as its so unpredictable with me.

I was on it for several years, however, it stopped working so am now on Insulin. Never had any problems with weight gain. My wife is on it and it gives her hypos.

i was prescribed it 3 weeks ago already on Metformin, and Siptiglin, had no weight gain but even having half a tablet and taking differnt times of day, my sugars are low and had hypos. have stopped and DSN will review again next Wedensday.

Took my first dose today so will see how it goes.

Is it true you should not have alcohol when on Gliclazide

Does it say that in the Info Leaflet in the packet?

But anyhow, it's cos alcohol reduces your BG anyway, and if you are also taking BG lowering drugs eg Gliclazide or insulin, it can take you VERY unawares. So you do always have to be VERY careful about alcohol consumption when you have to take such things.

I take both metformin and gliclazide. Started off on the former, whose information leaflet says not to drink, and so I didn't, for a month. Then I went to a group dietician session and asked about it; "Oh, everyone drinks on metformin".

When I met my new(ish) doctor for the first time back in July, he was scratching around for ideas as to how I could reduce my levels and said I could cut down on my drinking - which would imply that "everyone drinks on metformin and gliclazide".

I do need to point out here that I don't drink that much - two glasses of wine after my evening class last night and that was the first I'd had since the previous Friday - but you do need to be careful, I've been caught out with one or two hypos. I don't usually eat bread/spuds/pasta/rice but when drinking I do have some carbs to counteract the effect.
