Freestyle Libre User Seeking Fellow Cyborgs

Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hey everyone,

Just stumbled upon this forum and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Thomas, a 38-year-old living in Addiscombe, Greater London. I'm originally from Belgium and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1996. Currently managing it with an insulin pen and Freestyle Libre sensor.

Outside of the diabetes world, I'm a fan of weightlifting, hockey, and swimming (though those have taken a backseat since becoming a father!). Love deep house music and exploring new places – London will always be my favourite city, but I've been lucky enough to travel to about 40 countries. Always up for a good TV series (Breaking Bad, Queen's Gambit, and The Diplomat is one of my recent favourites).

Currently trying to get a couple of business ventures off the ground. Would love to connect with others on here.

Cheers, Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Nice to meet you and welcome!
I’m Emily and really similar to you in that I’m turning 38 in a few weeks, diagnosed in 1998 and controlled with a freestyle and pens.
This forum is a great place for chatting, sharing good news, asking questions or even venting on a bad day!
Welcome!

HI @Thomas1986 and welcome to the forum - glad you have found us - it's a great place to share ideas and experiences with Diabetes and everything else - so glad someone else has joined who likes Hockey as it is my passion - don't play anymore but am an unpire at a regional level (maybe I've sent you off in tha past!!) - Big fan of House music too, although mainly on the harder side to be fair - big warm welcome to you 🙂

It's great to meet you too! Thanks for the warm welcome. It's really nice to connect with someone who understands the ups and downs of living with diabetes. And wow, diagnosed in '98 – you must be pro at this! Haha.

Having diabetes sometimes feel like a marathon right. Figuring out the carb counting from recipes has been especially tricky.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here and learning from your experiences. This forum already seems like a fantastic resource!

And happy early birthday for next month! I hope you have a wonderful celebration.

Hey there! It's awesome to connect with another hockey fan! And a referee, no less! I haven't been sent off in a while, though... I promise I'm usually a pretty well-behaved player.

I'm also into house music, though I lean more towards the deep and progressive stuff. Always up for discovering new tunes, though! Maybe we can swap some recommendations sometime.

Absolutely, chatting to people who understand the daily grind of diabetes is really important - glad you’ve found us!
Ahh thank you, January birthdays are a bit rubbish as everyone is partied out from Christmas so I appreciate the message!
Always happy to receive tv and house music recommendations too!

The harder side you say. Massive fan of most genres of house but as one of the instigators of Insomniacz hard house has a special place in my heart. And then there is the greatest hard house / NuNRG album of them all - Trade Vol 4 CD3 - Pete Wardman.

At house parties you'll often find me bullying the gabba/scarecore djs to play it even harder and I love a bit of acid techno too.

@Thomas1986 - welcome. I love a bit of deep house too. When I get the chance to DJ then old deep house/dark tech house is where I seem to land. Went to Scuba a few times to here in Sheffield. My brother in law is massively into the deep stuff too.

I went to Trade at Turnmills many years ago (back in the day!) and had an amazing time (I'm not gay but what a crowd, they know how to party!) - I will be getting the decks out on Christmas Day and having an impromtu rave in the living room like most years (causing all sorts of aggro with the OH) - it always happens once I've had a few - my next door neighbour usually then pops round and the pair of us end up reminicing about the good old days and then not speaking to our respective partners till the new year!

Never made it to Trade in London but went to some Trade nights at Rise (Leadmill) and went to Gay Pride when it was at its peak - Tony de Vit, Pete Wardman, Steve Thomas, Malcolm Duffy, Princess Julia, Andy Farley, Ian M etc.

Then ended up in a very early Fist by compete mistake but as you say, the partying was off the scale. The stage show was err... Interesting!!

Likewise I'm not gay but had some of the best nights out in gay clubs.

Really need to get a mix in. Still got all my records but haven't had decks in years (that's a painful story for another time!). My friends do though.

Many many hours spent mixing before and after Rise, Crasher, Insomniacz, Sundissential etc

Still get out every so often but back in the late 90's/early 00's it was every week. Often Friday and Saturday.

I used to have proper decks but now just have a cheap controller

1734992091143.png- one of my mates is a proper DJ so I nick loads of decent .wav files from him and add them on to a USB stick (how things have changed!) - I spent most of my youth blaggin my way into nightclubs in London (and illegal raves too, sometimes underage!) - enjoy it immensely (even though I'm not that good!)

It really is! It's so helpful to connect with people who get it.

And ha, I can definitely see that about January birthdays! Have heard it before too, you're not alone.

I'm always up for swapping recommendations! What are some of your favourite shows at the moment and do you have any favourite house music artists or new to the genre?

I'm totally with your brother-in-law – deep stuff all the way! What kind of sets does he like to play?

Welcome to the forum @Thomas1986 🙂

One of the nice things about the forum is being able to connect with people about other stuff than just our diabetes - and it looks like you are off to a flying start with that! :D
