They won’t talk to each other, but there’s no reason why you can’t use them both side by side. We used the Libre and accu-Chek Combo together for a few years.
 
Is the Insight the pump that requires you to use a specific meter?
If so, there are some other users of it on this forum. If I remember correctly @trophywench uses the Insight.
My understanding is you will still need to finger prick with the Accu-check Combo but the Libre should provide some great details into what is happening to your levels between finger pricks which you can use to adjust your basal rates or you bolus timing.
 
I'm back on a Combo as my lot wouldn't let me have another Insight - but anyway, what Helli said in her second paragraph. The Libre doesn't actually 'talk to' any pump at present as far as I know, although there have been rumours that the Omnipod Dash will, but doesn't yet ....
 
Do I need to speak to my doctor and get everything from freestyle libre then? I'm on accu-chek aviva insight,meter and insulin pump.
 
Usually Libre needs to be authorized on the NHS by a consultant and there are criteria to meet in order to get it on prescription. Some areas it seems easier to get than others and many of us had to self fund for a time before we got it. It helps to know the criteria and make a case for yourself to get it prescribed based on those criteria. Hopefully someone like @everydayupsanddowns will post the NICE guidance so that you can see where it might apply to you.
 
Thanks. It's already been approved and I've got the freestyle libre Sensor pack from the pharmacy. But just wonder if I can continue with the accu-chek or if I need to get everything from freestyle libre. And if so,what else do I need?
 
Do you have a compatible phone to use with it? I am not sure what you mean by everything else? I didn't have a compatible phone so I had to buy a reader. I am not authorized for test strips for the Libre so I I still have my Caresens BG meter and test strips to do finger pricks if needed.

If you haven't already, it really is important to do the online training modules at the Libre Academy so that you understand how the system works.
 
I don't know how much else I need If I can't use my accu-chek. Will I get a new meter and an insulin pump? I've got a Motorola mobile so hopefully that should be ok. I will ring the hospital tomorrow to find out .
 
My Motorola wasn't compatible so I needed to get a reader. I very much doubt they will change your pump unless you are due for a new one but I am not familiar with pumps and how BG input is transferred to the various ones. I know some are able to obtain data from some sensors but I don't think any pumps link up to Libre yet so you will likely need to manually input data either from your current BG meter or Libre sensor via a compatible phone or a reader. I funded my own reader because I was self funding the Libre sensors to start with and my phone wasn't compatible.
I don't know if any other pump users can explain how it will work with a pump or probably best if you speak to a DSN to find out what is required. The Abbott site is full of information and it will tell you there somewhere whether your phone is compatible as well as all the information you will need to understand how it differs from BG readings and how to interpret the info you get from it

I have a Motorola G6 Play which is compatible and reads the sensor. So long as it has NFC it should work well.

I have the Accuchek Combo pump at present and I use the Libre to scan and look at trends, but if I want to eat then I have to use the Combo handset and do a BG test as it's not possible to manually enter BGs into the pump. Same with the Insight.

No - you stay on the pump and use the handset/meter exactly as you always have done. You cannot use the Libre in direct replacement of your BG meter - the information gleaned from the Libre on trends simply gives us clues to adjust our current insulin doses (basal) to better match what our body happens to be doing more of the time.
Also by seeing exactly when BG increases after eating, we obtain better/more detailed info re the need for pre-bolusing.

So the Libre results are additional rather than instead of.

However - should I fancy a snack of 10ish g. carb between meals - eg cake with an afternoon cuppa, I will scan and do a quick self calculated standard bolus directly input to the pump itself without testing BG - I just don't do that at proper mealtimes though.
 
Ok so I had a chat with the hospital. As my pump is due to be expired I will get a new one. I could choose between Omni Pod Dash or the Metronic 640. Any suggestions? I've no idea ATM but will have a look later to see which one could be the best for me.

I have no experience of either pump but what strikes me in that one is a tubey pump (the Medtronic) and one is a patch pump (OmniPod).
This would be the first thing to consider.

Having used both tubey and patch, I think the key consideration is whether you want a more discrete patch (OmniPod) or more flexibility of placement (Medtronic).

You may want to start a new thread if you want feedback on this as the pump choice may get lost in a thread about Libre.
 
FWIW I don't think either of them will communicate with the Libre as things stand at present.
 
The Medtronic won't communicate with the Libre, it will communicate with the Guardian CGM sensor, even self funding the Guardian sensor still will need your consultants agreement, otherwise the won't sell you one. But they are £50 a throw and last 7days.. Hence why I stopped self funding.

I don't start on the Libre until next Monday, but the meter that comes with the Meditronic 640 you can manually enter your BG for a bolus. But unless you're very sure the information from the Libre scan is pretty correct I'd still would use the finger prick to obtain
