It seems to me that on average diabetics have more food allergies/intolerances than most. I thought it would be interesting to do a poll (not designed yet) but before doing so I need to get a list of foods to include. My initial list is:-

Dairy (from cattle)
Wheat
Shellfish
MSG
Nuts

Additions to the list, and comments most welcome!

P.S. Colleague just said sugar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some people are allergic to bananas. 🙂

Apparently Celery intolerance isn't unknown either

Don't forget a separate item for Peanuts. Peanuts are not nuts, they are beans.

I'm pretty intolerant of celery - just the thought of the foul smelling/tasting stuff makes my thoat close up! 😱 Yuck!

Its well studied. Someone with one autoimmune disease has a WAY above average chance of having a second autoimmune disease.

Blame it on the genes ( HLA DQ 2 / 8 ) ( sometimes HLA B 27 also makes an appearance )

The classic pairing is Coeliac disease & LADA. Many ( most? ) coeliacs are lactose intolerant.

Diabetes appears to be much more common than ( for instance ) coeliac disease because its so much harder for the medics to not spot it. ( only around 10% of coeliacs are ever diagnosed ).

Other delightful ( not ) autoimmune diseases that are frequently paired with coeliac include rheumatoid arthritis 😱and ankylosing spondylitis😱.

WRT allergies how about.....Kiwi fruit....and also something in lemon & ginger tea infusions that I just cant figure out

Found this site to explain the difference.

I am allergic to eggs and carry an epi-pen with me. Although Type2 is not an autoimmune disease, people with Type2 can suffer from all autoimmune conditions. Chrohns is one that springs to mind.

I'd forgotten about eggs, I believe some people can't have the flu jabs because of an egg allergy?

Red and Green Peppers are a complete no for me. Also nuts. (as in I can't eat them, not that I am nuts, although, thinking about it.......)

No allergies or anything, so include that option wont you 😉

What actually constitutes you being alergic to something? is it coming out in a rash or some kind of reaction in the body?

I think it varies. I know some people who get a fairly mild reaction - a rash or a fever. But I have met a couple of people that exposure to nuts would be fatal for them - basically anaphhylaxic shock.

Thats true ! Often comes with the damage caused by lactose, can't remember it exactly but the two go hand in hand.

Oddly enough the fact I have both is a bit odd since my damage supposedly is minimal (diagnosed coeliac young) and its only in the last couple of years lactose intolerance has really cropped up.

I love this fact 🙂 Peanuts are legumes!

I've had several allergies, not half as bad now

Coeliac Disease
Lactose Intolerance
Kiwi's too !

I also had an allergy test at the hospital one time which confirmed
Cats/Dogs
Tree pollen
Dust Mites - used to have to put my teddies in the freezer :(

Used to be :
Eggs
Oranges
Mangos
Blackcurrants
Forest Fruits
Strawberries

I am slightly sensitive to the fruits I used to have real problems with even now, can't eat too many.
I had so many days off from school throughout primary due to these! Never did I suffer too badly with coeliac but other allergies frequently caused me swellings and hives etc.
Now I also have asthma which is triggered by these allergies. Fortunately I was always okay with nuts!!!

Thanks Mark 🙂

I am allergic to eggs when ingested (though not when injected for the Flu Jab) causing me to become bloated and then rather gassy, same with onions though they only require the tiniest bit and I become "fragrant" for 24 hours.
I have a strong (though not lethal) allergy to nuts and peanuts, with my entire body erupting in a rash and me instantly vomiting to remove them from my system, I also swell up (not my throat fortunately) and become very itchy. Been admitted to hospital following a reaction to nuts (Almonds in a christmas pud a few years ago) not nice being injected with anti-histamine when you're vomiting

hi i am allergic to strawberrys but graham is not but is lactose intollerant since he was 18 months

I think you'll find that most research shows that rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder.
