That is interesting, I strongly suspect they'll discover lots of subtypes because it's clear from people's experience it's not nearly as simple as the medical profession seems to think it is.

I'm thankful that I've got boring old straightforward T1!🙄

In some ways it does seem to match my experience. Diagnosed with DKA and HbA1c of 11.8%, within 6 weeks that was down to 6.8%, then after 3 months in low 5% and it's been there ever since (I think I had one blip of 6.2% a couple of years ago. TDD of insulin has dropped from 65 units to around 15-20 units. I don't need basal insulin, but do need bolus insulin for any carbs. It's pretty clear that my beta cells have recovered to some extent, and that commenced within months of diagnosis.

As far as I know I have no African ancestry, and the only Type 2 diabetes in the family is my Auntie, who was diagnosed two years ago at the age of 77. I've never been tested for antibodies, although my consultant has 'threatened' to have the tests done each time I see him. I will put this to him and see if he's aware of it, should be seeing him in the next couple of months. I'd hate to be put on oral meds though, I really need the flexibility that insulin gives me in controlling my levels and eating more or less as I please.
