I think I must have jinxed myself yesterday after writing a post about being worried my blood sugar was too high... today at 11.30am I realised I had the shakes and felt hot and sweaty - turns out my blood sugar had dropped to 2.9!
So, I've officially experienced my first hypo... found it scary but also discovered that my work colleagues are an amazing bunch of supportive people! I guess my question for today is what's the best way to deal with potential hypo's at work - at the moment i'm keeping wine gums in my top drawer but would gladly take advice from people used to this situation!
Hope everyone is doing ok today?
Hannah

congrats, only kidding...........

at least you know what if feels like now.............

the standard procedure is 15-20g of quick acting carbs, so jelly babies, wine gums, full sugar juice and there are several other hypo specific treatments like glucotabs, glucogel................

Well, at least now you know what the warning signs are! Glad to hear you got some good support from your colleagues 🙂 I would say that wine gums might be a bit too chewy to treat a hypo quickly - I personally use jelly babies which are softer and easier to eat quickly. Some people use full sugar coke or other full sugar drinks as these are quickest of all to act - you need about 150 ml of liquid or 3 jelly babies (5g sugar each). Alternatives are glucose or dextrose tablets.

Always carry something like this with you as you never know when you might need it - you may be away from your desk when the symptoms hit, for example. I hope it's a long time before the next one! 🙂

Hi Hannah. Well done. A milestone passed. :D

It's reckoned that fizzy drinks pass through the intestines quicker than anything else, so lucozade or full sugar coke are ideal. You can get small 150ml cans of coke that contain 15g glucose which are good for the sub-3 hypos.

But jelly babies are standard currency in the diabetes community it would seem :D

hey all, there's one problem with jelly babies - i really don't like them! would haribo work?!

I wouldn't use wine gums to treat a hypo, better with something that enters the body fast rather than chewing for ages. Liquid glucose in the form of full sugar coke or lucozade are preferable to sweets to bring blood glucose back up quickly.

Some people use fruit pastilles or skittles 🙂 Avoid chocolates though as the fat slows the sugar. Haribo are probably OK as long as they don't take too long to chew 🙂

Oh no! Now all I want is to go and chew some jelly babies, oh how I miss them lol One thing that I have found for middle of the night hypo's is a penguin, especially if your bm is minus 3, they even melt in the mouth and you only usually need half. I know the fat slows the intake but if you are almost incapable, and I am glad that you have not had one that bed yet, they are perfect. I find that they just slip into my bag also if I am going out. I never seem to find tiny jelly baby bags and so I had to split a packet and if I didn't go hypo for ages they just went sticky and had to be thrown away. At least this is one big hurdle out of the way and your friends and work colleagues proved themselves to be worth a whole bag of jelly babies lol

I use Glucose tablets mostly, you can get them in different flavours. You DON'T like Jelly babies, ooohhhh they're lovely. I know our little Grace has a packet of Haribo in her D kit, but I haven't given her any, as yet. Welcome to your 1st hypo 😛 I hope they are few and far between and now, at least, you know what it feels like. Hypos and Hypers are part of the big D, I'm afraid:( Take care with very best wishes Sheena I hope you have a hypo free day at workX

Are we talking about a penguin biscuit? Couldn't think of anything worse for treating a hypo especially ''if your bm is minus 3 and almost incapable''😱 Anyone with such a low bg needs to get their bg up asap.

It doesnt taste great but
Lucozade is very fast acting.......and because it doesn't taste great you shouldn't be tempted to have too much. As previously said it is extremely important to have something quick acting with you wherever you are you never know where and when you might have a hypo and the last thing you want is to have a low sugar that you can't treat. But I hope that you don't have many hypos

I always carry a little bag of jelly babies with me and keep some mixer cans of full fat Irn-Bru in the fridge at work (I really hate lucozade). Plus, there's usually biscuits in the tin, short bread fingers at the very least.

I'm so glad it happened while you had company, your colleagues sound great.

Hi Toby! Yes I meant a Penguin biscuit not the living animal haha. I am quite lucky to still be compus mentus at 2-3, enough to know that I need to eat immediately but I am not very good at chewing so the penguin is the end of a very long road trying lots of different things and I have found that it works for me. As I said it does melt so all I have to do is swallow and it works every time for me. I also find that bringing my sugars up slowly stops me from vomiting which I tend to do when they come up quickly. When I was younger the only thing that we had were sugar cubes or glucose powder but that was not easily available until I was about 6 so I will take a Penguin any time hahaha. I have also found that since I have had more control over my bloodsugars and they are almost all at 5 or around there I can tolerate a much lower blood sugar before I pass out, under 2 and I need serious help! Have a great day!
