Can anyone give me advise please : i'm going out to a Japanese restaurant on Fri Night with work and its book for 9.00pm! so probably wont eat till 9.30pm.
I've been doing Dafne and my lunch time ratio is 1 unit to 1CP and my teatime ratio is 1.5 units to 1CP, and i've been told snacks above 1CP is 1 unit to 1 CP.. so my question is:
What could i have a tea time to keep me going, coz i dont think i could last till 9pm - what ratio do i put in at teatime and what ratio do i put in at 9pm?.. if i was out of range at teatime would i put a correction in?
thanks

Hi chez.

If it were me, Id have a snack at tea time using your normal teatime ratio, then the same ratio (1.5) with the Japanese later (probably after in case of delays).

I would treat the teatime snack (couple of rounds of toast or something ?) as if it were your tea and test and correct if needed.

Then enjoy your night out and test after with correction if needed either way. Remember to allow for the alcohol effect if you're drinking any.

That's what I'd do but I'm not overly experienced at late night meals.

I would do exactly as Rob has said, if you at at teatime do usual thing.

If you just have digestive or something do snack ratio, if more substantial do tea time ratio.

I eat out quite late, 9pm a lot. If im going to be drinking before i may have a bag of crisps with no bolus to keep me going until i eat and just correct with meal if needed.

For me my ratio changes in the evening and reduces quite a lot. if you have not experimented with late ratios i would maybe err on side of caution and do a lower ratio and correct later if needed.

Enjoy your evening!

Thanls for your replies.. i've not even my tea so late before so wasnt sure how to handle it.. maybe i should experiment at home one day this week.

Do you never have supper or anything at this time? what would your ratio be if you did?

Hiya!
Nope i never have supper and if i did have something to eat it would be because i was too low for bed..

Try having your lunch later than normal, that way you won't be hungry early evening and you'll enjoy your meal out all the more.

Thats what i have done in the past, but i'm working so i wont be able too

wow, 😱 you never eat in the evenings.

I never stop eating :D

Do you not get hungry or is it something you stick to because of diabetes and you dont want to inject etc? Just curious to know.

I know some of the people on my dafne course ate at specific times as they had been used to this over the years. The great thing about dafne is that you really can eat what you want and when you want. It can be very emotional for people suddenly eating when they feel like rather than when they feel they have to or not.

Much the same opinion as the rest......

If I couldnt hold out I would have something small at tea time, test, correct and inject at the usual ratio at that time.....

If however my evening meal was within 5 hours of the teatime dose I would inject at 1unit : 10 grams, as opposed to my normal ratio, to avoid overlapping the doses.....thats just me though....

My ratios go by time of day as opposed to type or size of meal..........

I dont eat late at night probably through habit with diabetes and also to control my weight.. I asked my Dafne nurse and she said have snack at tea if more than 1cp inject 1unit to 1cp.. then do my normal teatime dose for 9pm tea but dont correct as if injected for snack it wont be the correct reading and rectify my level the next day!
What confuses me is my ratio for breakfast and tea is 1.5units to 1 cp and my lunch is 1 unit to 1cp.. so if i ate when i want what ratio would i use?what's the cut off point and change over of ratio's? so if i only had a small snack through out the day of 2cp i just use 1 unit to 1 cp.. i suppose i need to ask this to my nurse..

Yes, isn't the worst thing about diabetes not being able to eat when you want (even if you're hungry!) then having to eat when you don't want to, because of a hypo - all those unwanted calories too! Plus it seems to me that 'adjustment' food is always unhealthy - biscuits or lucozade - calories with no natural goodness, vitamins/minerals etc. I thought I ate better 10 years ago when I didn't have diabetes. (Sorry, big moan!)

Does anyone else struggle with eating late at night - I can't control well when eating after 9pm - I always eat too much and even when I give what I think is the correct dose I am high the folowing morning. Perhaps a different ratio is the answer - I'll experiment.
Japanese food should be OK to eat late as sushi is just pure protein, no carbs - although other stuff may have, like teriyaki etc

In theory you should be able to eat food at anytime as long as the dose is right, experimentation is the only way to get the right ratio........🙂

Yes it is Teriyaki which i've not had before - so i presume its fatty!
