Do I need a fridge whilst travelling?!!

Hi there,

I travel alot for work but i’ve never used a fridge/mini bar to keep insulin in, as my understanding was that once a insulin pen was out of the fridge, it’s okay at room temp for up to a month?

I have a FRIO pouch and an insulated small pouch for out and about which does the job at keeping the temp stable in warm countries!

Its just that 2 people have now asked if i need fridge access whilst I am away, and I never thought much about it until now

I too travel a lot for work and have never had fridge access when away.
I have read too many horror stories about badly maintained fridges freezing insulin that I avoid using hotel fridges.

I always return my unused/opened insulin to my fridge when I get home and make a note of how many days it has been at room temperature. This has never caused any issues.

Unless you are away for long periods of time in one trip or have had issues with insulin going "off" (e.g. appearing to be less strong when it has been out of the fridge for a longer time), I think you are fine without a fridge/mini bar for your insulin.
On the other hand, if they are offering a fully stocked mini-bar... 😉

No you don’t need a fridge. You don’t even need a frio unless it’s very hot, as a frio only keeps insulin at room temperature of 18-26c. If it’s going to be over 26 then worth using the frio.

Hello, it’s nice they asked to accommodate your perceived needs. I just use my Frio bags if going somewhere hot.

Seen thread title then had images in my head of someone carrying fridge on their back to store insulin.
Well - some people do just that whilst climbing an Alp or similar to raise dosh for charity. Yes believe me I do understand that charities rely on donations but come on ..... !

Most ordinary folk are clueless about insulin although do know it "has to be stored in the fridge" so imagine it absolutely needs to go back in there asap after each use. After all, you have to replace milk, butter, meat etc asap don't you - so it's kind of logical the same applies to insulin.

Good example to us lot of "The exception proving the Rule" 😉 😉😉

Remember there was one guy who ran marathons with fridge on his back, sure he did london marathon.

Maybe his day job was delivering appliances for Curry's.

Room temperature has always been fine for any short trips I’ve been on, and Frio has helped on Summer camping trips.
