Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi there, I am a type 1 diabetic and I want some information on DLA/PIP benefits as I had applied for this but was declined and have now appealed on the decision. So those who have gone through the situation or know about this. Please let me know.

Welcome to the forum, Ria Patel.
Assuming you're now aged over 16 years, you can only apply for PIP. The rules are different to DLA, and effectively, lowest rate care of DLA has no equivalent in PIP.
In general, it is very difficult, if not impossible, for someone with type 1 diabetes and no complications nor other physical or mental issues to qualify for any rate of PIP daily living or mobility. However, as there's no cost involved to the claimant, there's no harm in appealing. Overall, attending an oral appeal hearing has higher success rate for claimant than a hearing on the papers.

It's very tough qualifying for the new PIP (personal independence payment) now and the important thing to remember is it's not the name of the condition or disability that you have, it's the way it uniquely affects you.
These are some of the areas that you are required to need assistance with in order to qualify;

  • preparing and cooking food
  • eating and drinking
  • managing your treatments
  • washing and bathing
  • managing toilet needs or incontinence
  • dressing and undressing
  • communicating with other people
  • reading and understanding written information
  • mixing with others
  • making decisions about money
  • planning a journey or following a route
  • moving around
There's the care and mobility component and in an attempt to cut the welfare budget, the qualifying criteria is now incredibly tight.

Perhaps you can say what criteria you are applying on and appealing against Ria. Do you have other contributing illnesses or conditions you're asking them to consider?

Basically diabetes isn't a disability it's a condition which does not extra government help for day to day living expenses.
People with complications are entitled in some cases for help but not always. At the age of 18 you should be no different than any other 18 year old so enjoy life to the full 🙂
