Recently diagnosed - 2 weeks ago, found this fantastic website, so many helpful people on here with great advise - thank you.

I started taking the Metformin 2 x 500 mg per day for a week (1 in morning and 1 in evening) and have now increased to 2 x 500 in the morning and 2 x 500 in the evening. I have such bad diahorrea and know that it is a very common side effect, but will it eventually go, I don't want to go back to the Dr without giving it a chance, how long is a reasonable time to wait?

Many thanks in advance.

Even after a couple of years I had my "metformin days"..... Give it a few weeks, if it persists then you should go & get the Extended Release version

Thanks Martin - do you think I should wait a couple more weeks - that would make it a month?

I would think so unless it's constant, I found that mid-morning for about an hour would be where I had issues

IVE been on Metformin since November .... even though it’s not as bad I’m still having issues. Going to Docs tomorrow although can't get to see diabetic doc so not sure how that’ll work.

Give it a couple of weeks if you can stand it, and then ask the doc about the slow release. You probably should have gone from 1000mg a day to 1500mg for a week or so, and then 2000mg. But if it doesn't calm down then it won't matter anyway. There are other medication options, so don't suffer too long.

I tried taking Metformin and a statin for about five weeks - I think I managed to take two tablets on two days - but I was so ill - joints and muscles aching, insides trying to escape, feeling so ill and miserable, unable to concentrate or remember what I'd just been doing, unable to leave the house, taking five showers a day and putting on clean clothes - bought a new carpet cleaner.
I stopped taking the tablets just before Christmas 2016 but it took months to get back to normal.
