Relationship to Diabetes
Hi,

My wife received a letter today offering her a place in a trial for new medication. The letter stated that she had been chosen as her GP had stated that she was type2 diabetic and she had Diabetic Kidney Disease. She had not been told anything about haveing DKD by the GP.

Any advice welcome.

Gerald

Hi. Well - I'd be on the phone first thing on Monday - demanding that the GP called me back PDQ to discuss !!

Hi Gerald, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'd also be on the phone to find out why this important information appears to have been withheld from your wife! It's possible that she may have very mild indications, as CKD (Chronic Kidney disease) has several stages - see the following link for more details:

Has she been diagnosed with diabetes long? How have things been for her?

Thanks for the replies,

Diagnosed about six years ago, was on Metformin now on Gliclazide. she is coping but has joint pain. She has got a GP appointment on this coming Wednesday and I think I will go along with her to see what is said about not being told.

Wow that would make my blood boil! Hope you get some answers from the GP. Does your wife have an annual review? She should have a number of blood tests and a urine sample given which is tested for protein. She should receive the actual results, not just be told they're "normal". It may be that she has some protein leakage indicating early kidney damage....or it may be that she is fine and this is an error.

As an aside, my son is unfortunate in having early diabetic kidney damage and sees the renal team at Great Ormond St Hospital. They told me that whereas 95% of their patients have a genetic kidney issue, when we move to adult renal clinic, 95% of patients are diabetic, and the vast majority only referred when they are close to needing dialysis, instead of much earlier when the specialist team could help them stave off deterioration.

Yes she has an annual review with the tests, always told normal. I have a lot of UTI's because of my many problems and I have urine test strips for when I get symptoms. I did a urine test for her which showed slihtly over trace protein in it. I will be starting a new post for some advice for myself soon.
