Hi everyone. I had a call from my surgery telling me I have diabetes. So i googled diabetes with an ileostomy and found you. Reading some comments on here has made me realise I'm going to need a lot of help. I'm not sure what type I have but will see a doctor face to face on thursday so will find out more. It seems so much to take in with numbers and abbreviations I'm at a loss to know what you're all saying lol. Hopefully I will learn quickly with your help x
Welcome @Juney🙂 Yes, it is a lot to take in at first, both practically and emotionally. It does get easier though🙂
My advice is to take a notepad and pen to your appointment on Thursday. Write down any questions you have on it so you can ask on Thursday (it’s so easy to forget when you’re in front of someone), and also use the notepad to jot down any additional information you’re given. Again, it’s so easy to forget.
Ask your diabetes type, and ask your HbA1C which was probably the test used to diagnose you, as a start, but there are lots more questions that might occur to you so jot them down as you think of them.
I may be wrong, but are you already following a restricted diet with your Ileostomy? I read that the usual diet following an Ileostomy is bland, low fibre, and up to 6 very small meals. Will your procedure be reversed, or is permanent? The normal advice for Type 2 Diabetes (which is the most common at our age) is to follow a low carbohydrate diet. Greatly reduce or eliminate bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, and all the usual suspects - cakes, biscuits, pastries, sweets, and restrict fruits. So I think one of the questions you will need to ask, is how to marry the two diets together. The other thing to ask about is medication. The usual initial treatment for Type 2 is Metformin, which can have side effects on your bowel movements, something I suspect you don't want. If your doctor is on the ball, they should be aware of your medical issues, and the side effects. If you just get to see a nurse they probably won't have the specialist knowledge of both conditions. Please ask for clarity from your doctor if you are not sure. Best wishes
We have had a few new joiners asking about diabetes and ileostomy recently, and some posts over the years. Good to know that Google pointed you in our direction.
Hope you can find some helpful ideas among those old threads
I have Type1 Diabetes for 55 years diagnosed aged 6 and 2 years ago I had a Cecal Volvulus and ended up with a stoma. I am having problems with my blood glucose because I am not able to eat all the fruit and vegetables I ate prior to my Ileostomy And the bland boring food is not really helping my mood as well. I have always had good control of my diabetes but not at the moment. I was gowned up, drip and insulin pump in place to have a reversal and the Consultant came to tell me that the Anaesthetist was unwell and had they had to cancel the op.
hi I have had an ileostomy since age 19 I am now 58 I eat anything and everything definitely do not have to eat bland food I do not know who gave you that advise but it is rubbish. I eat Indians etc spicy food I eat loads of veg and fruit. the only foods I cannot eat is fresh coconut and nuts as they can cause severe constipation. your output is not supposed to be hard it is naturally soft. no need to bulk it out . I wear skin tight jeans etc never have problems. I have just been diagnosed with type2 and apart from eating less potatoes and bread I have no problems. I never take skin off apples etc if anyone would like advice please don't hesitate to ask etc
I do apologize for upsetting you that was not my intention. I was just explaining you don't have to have plain boring food etc which seems to be mentioned alot on here about ileostomy.
obviously everyone glucose balance and food is different for everyone.

Hi. I absolutely agree, I eat most things. 57, ileostomy for 21 years and T2 for 3 with metformin. I seem to remember being told or give booklets that did actually say stick to bland food. I was never one to listen so I guess like you I’ve tried things and if they’re ok, then they’re ok. One thing I can’t seem to have (it can but suffer the consequences with near blockages), is raw hard fruit such as apples and pears, and veg.
thank you I'm pleased you ignored book and worked what suits you . I was never told about what food to eat so I just eat mostly all shame about the hard fruit must have something to do with it getting through. I could not take Metformin I lost pints of fluid in a few days. I have great Dr I was changed to empaglaflozen but gave weird side effects. so now I'm trying gliklazide 2 a day. they were popular if Metformin did not agree but not used as much these help. only thing with these they can drop glucose too much do need to do finger test before driving so hope these work . have a great Xmas and hope you all get better results and choices.
