Diabetes UK’s Type 2 Together service is a new volunteer-led approach to learning more about living with diabetes from people who understand what it’s like to live with the condition. We offer people a chance to meet others with Type 2 diabetes in their local area, to share experiences and practical tips to live well with diabetes. We are developing a network of groups for people with Type 2 diabetes to support each other in relaxed and informal sessions, facilitated by a trained volunteer who has diabetes themselves. Sometimes you need support from someone who knows exactly what you're going through. Whatever is on your mind, there's a good chance somebody else at our Type 2 Together groups has been through the same thing.

The groups are run once a month in local venues by trained volunteers who also have diabetes, and are currently available in:

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
Includes Cambridge, Peterborough, Huntingdon, St Ives and Fulbourne.

East and North Hertfordshire
Includes Hitchin, Letchworth, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hertford, Hoddesdon and Bishop’s Stortford.

Mid-Essex
Includes Braintree, Witham, Chelmsford and Maldon.

North East Essex
Includes Colchester and Clacton.

Dudley
Includes Brierley Hill, Stourbridge and Halesowen.

Coventry and Rugby

Let us know if you get involved, all feedback is appreciated! 🙂

I'd be interested in that. Eastern end of West Yorkshire.

If a group is formed in my area I would be very interested.

Hey! What about us craiturs North of the Border?

Seriously though, this sounds like an excellent initiative, I hope it succeeds.

It's a bit like the forum meets that we used to have such success with - everyone always said how great it was to meet others with diabetes and be able to talk about it without non-Ds eyes glazing over or saying daft things! 🙂

Although the one problem I see is that there are no details on when the events are actually held and you have to register.

Personally I'd want to be able to go along ad-hoc first before deciding if I wanted to attend on a more regular basis. Absolutely zero chance they will get my phone number either!

Quite probably the events will be at the wrong time for me also. The local DUK branch holds meetings in the evenings which don't suit me.

I quite liked the Forum meetings as they were an excuse to go into London...

I had an invite via my surgery a couple of months ago, I registered. I got reply quite quickly, but it was a few weeks before I was informed of a meeting which is a coffee morning in September. I will give it a try.
My Diabetic Nurse at the surgery did not know about ! She wants me to feedback to her.
I am in Essex. My understanding is that these groups are trail to a possible roll out!

Please let us know how things go grovesy 🙂 Hope it's a big success. The blurb does say that it's currently a pilot project, so if it's a success it could be rolled out to more regions 🙂

Oh well, no point my registering - I'm at work!

Although, if it had of been a weekend that's easy cycling distance from my house.

it is worth registering as I believe they are trying them else where, I believe there is to be a group in Chelmsford.
The co-ordinator is based in Witham, where the Health Authority has offices. I suspect this is the first meeting. They were wanting volunteers to train to run groups aswell.
I am not sure it will be my thing but am going to give it a try, as it is in easy reach for me.
