Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello everyone today we got the diagnosis for Yoda our 10 year old Chorkie (chihuahua and Yorkshire terrier cross). He has diabetes, for the last two weeks he has been drinking tonnes of water then weeing in the house, (Which he would never do ordinarily). He has lost a bot of weight but he was overweight and that's probably why diabetes came about.

For all the tests, consultations and Meds (insulin) we have a 240 pounds bill. The insulin is 48 pounds so we are thinking about getting it from petdrugs online where it is 18 pounds but we need a prescription - how much will this cost does anyone think? We have a payment plan to pay off the account but the ongoing insulin cost I am looking to get much cheaper.

Also if anyone has any advice on maintaining a dog with the condition I would be grateful. I have to inject him twice a day at the moment and keep a record of his glucose by gathering his wee somehow and using strips. Thanks for reading...

Sorry to hear that Andy, had a scare with my eldest a few years ago... Fortunately it turned out that she was just incontinent.

overweight and that's probably why diabetes came about.
Dogs usually develop T1, which is an autoimmune disorder, so his weight probably had nothing to do with it.

Best of luck with treating your FurBaby....

Hi Andy, a prescription from your vet is about £12 so ask for a 6 month or 12 month prescription for the insulin.
Don't be fooled into having to feed the prescription diet either just adjust the insulin for the food your dog eats.
I had a collie many years ago who developed diabetes at the age of 14, oh the fun of following him around for a wee sample with a little tray.
When you take your dog for a walk always make sure you have some liquid glucose with you just in case of a low blood sugar.

Easier with a bitch - I worked with a chap who followed theirs round the garden every morning with an old saucer to catch it in!

Hi guys thanks for your replies. I have got a cheap roasting tray thats gone rusty so i will chase him with that lol. The poor boy is a trooper and doing well. I have just injected his first injection of 2ui ? is that how you say it?

I have been talking to him every twenty minutes just to make sure I dont need to glucose him.

Hi Andy and welcome to the forum. Hope you manage to get the prescription and insulin for Yoda. And good luck following him round with the roasting tray!

Bless him, I hope he manages well, and that he doesn't develop a phobia for roasting trays! 😱 🙂

Hi Andy,
easiest thing to use is a saucer or a little jug or mug, you can buy disposable gloves so you don't get messy.
Your little dog will soon get the idea of the injections and it will be part of his routine.

You will soon know if your little chap is hypo as he will look a tad more than drunk and have problems with his balance. 🙂

So far so good. He is chilling out a lot. I am taking him to the beach in a minute as he loves it there. As for the injections he does not notice it at all I just sit on the kitchen floor talking to him as he eats and then when he is finished I say "Whats that?" and he looks back at his bowl and I then zap him! 😛

He needs to be injected before he eats read the instructions in the leaflet that came with the insulin.

Thank you Martin. I have started injecting Yoda at 9am and again at 8pm. It is really hard to hit the 12 hour gold standard. I do not feed treats in between meals and he is going to have to get used to it.

That article is really helpful and I have copied it and printed it out for everyone to read.
