Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi i’ve just been diagnosed with With Type II diabetes and I also have fibromyalgia. I’m finding it really hard as I have no energy all I want to do is sleep. I work in a kitchen so on my feet all day at work. I know I need to exercise I’m not doing that will help myself but finding it really hard to get started. Has anyone else had a similar problem And could give me some help and advice on what help you to deal with it.

Hi & welcome to the forum. I guess with recent diagnoses your sugar levels are higher than you would like them to be, being tired is a symptom of diabetes so when your sugar levels are somewhat back on target I hope that the tiredness will disappear.

Regarding exercise and diabetes, Diabetes UK has lots of information on their website and I hope this link helps https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/managing-your-diabetes/exercise. You can also contact the helpline who can send out information too the number is here 0345 123 2399

Any other questions please feel free to ask away.

I think you might be quite surprised how much exercise you are actually doing while at work especially as you are on your feet and moving about. I had a step counter in my pocket when I was at work and most days would chalk up 15000-20000 steps. It all counts as exercise and all you may need to do is try to increase what you are doing by a small amount to make a difference combined with looking at your intake of carbohydrates and trying to reduce what you have of high carb foods would be a good start.
Keeping a food diary for a few weeks would help you to see where some changes could help you.

Hi Lucille, welcome to the site.

I live with both type 2 and fibro. It's a real challenge as feeling exhausted and pained is a core part of fibro let alone when your blood sugar numbers are out of whack.

I've found that my diet has a significant impact, I take supplements to help me maximise my energy levels and reduce the amount of 'work' my body needs to do.

I like Smoothies made from spinach (it has no flavour so not as gross as it sounds lol) mixed with vitamins and some frozen berries gives me a nice boost. I also make sure to pay attention to the needs of my body and rest when I need to.

Self care is also very important so Epsom salt baths, tiger balm leg massages, massages in general and having a good sleep pattern.

Please don’t add more exercise as it will just make your more fatigued. Your activity level will already be high because of your work. If you can get to a point where you don’t feel fatigued just doing your normal day then yes add some low intensity exercise in then but not too much as the rebound of fatigue can be terrible with fibro.

Low carb diets will help with your diabetes but you may find it hard to balance with your fibro (everyone is different but some people find they need carbs to offset the fatigue of fibro). Looking at slow release carbs when you do have carbs is good. Have you have a medication review for your fibro since being diagnosed with diabetes? Making sure you have the best pain relief onboard and are able to sleep well at night will help with the fatigue to a degree.

You may benefit from doing finger pricks so you can see what your BG is doing.
