A diabetes diagnosis is never less than life-changing; for Sam Brand, however, it was the moment life truly began.

It is 17 years ago to the day that Brand, then aged just 10, was told he had type 1 diabetes. By a cruel twist of irony, it happened to be World Diabetes Day.

Fast forward to 2018 and he has just completed his debut season racing for the first professional cycling team made up entirely of riders with his condition, the US-based Team Novo Nordisk, which was formed in 2008 and also counts Ireland's Stephen Clancy on its roster.

Far from considering his diagnosis to be an inhibitor, Brand wears it like a badge of honour. In the last two years he has gone from stagiaire to competing at the longest professional one-day race in modern cycling, the Milan-Sanremo, and representing the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games.

They are staggering individual achievements by any reckoning, but for Brand there is a bigger picture to consider - one that comes into focus on the anniversary of his diagnosis.

Inspirational. 'Happy' diaversary Sam. 🙂

Agreed, Matt. A great inspiration to any young person wondering what could happen in the future, the answer to which is anything, bar a Mars explorer.🙂

The planet, I mean, not the comestible.
