Can anyone tell me what is the best type of oil to use when cooking,I bought extra virgin olive oil a week ago but after bothering to read the bottle it doesn't mention cooking,it seems intended for drizzling over salads etc,so I have been using sunflower oil that I had in the cupboard.
I haven't got a deep fat fryer,so it would be for frying in a pan,I'm confused about standard olive oil for that purpose too, when you read about smoking points etc

it is extra virgin olive oil that is recommended, also butter, coconut oil, rapeseed. all are saturated fats but if you are not using much it doesnt really matter.

i use Extra Virgin Olive oil to drizzle of vegetables to roast. I only use butter occasionally to fry mushrooms. I don't tend to use any oil to fry meats.

I reserve the extra virgin olive oil for salad dressing and use a lighter one for cooking eggs, otherwise I use the fats from the meat - lamb is very good as it has very little, if any meaty taste or odour.
I was watching a program last night about sewers being blocked by fats being poured down drains - I wipe out my pans with a kitchen towel but save all the 'clean' fat for frying and cooking - it might be a good thing if more people did so.

Yes, we do the same, wipe the pan out and save the 'clean' fat for using later. We use light olive oil and occasionally butter (virgin olive oil is for my salads). I cannot imagine chucking it down the drain 😱, that's nasty!

We often grill meats too instead of frying.

Yes that's a good idea, when you consider the price of hiring a plumber

Any fats that might be left I pour into my food recycling bags, obviously when it cools a little, tie up bag and put in my food recycling caddy ready for collection. Any residue left in pan I will wipe away with kitchen paper before washing pan.

I am not being picky but my waste food bags specificly says no fats on the bag.

I just read our food recycling bags. It does not mention about fats or oils.
I do not do that often, mostly if I cook the meat in foil.
I may give my council a ring ask them if is not allowed in food recycling. I will let you know what our council says about it. Thank you for your letting me know about your area in UK.

I got in touch with the recycling plant. They said I am doing the right thing putting my small quantities of fat/oil in recycling bags. Maybe different parts of UK have different rules.

I use rapeseed oil, sometimes I spray fry light instead.

I know they do for other recycling, even in neighbouring areas.

Our recycling are interested in places like restaurants, shops and stuff, where they use lots of oils. That is where they will collect it from their premises.
