Sanofi have informed us of a continued interruption to the supply of Apidra (insulin glulisine) OPTISET and SOLOSTAR prefilled pens and CLIKSTAR reusable cartridges, following a production problem at their factory. They now anticipate a return to stock in March 2012, which is longer than the anticipated date of December 2011 given when we first reported the problem.

None of the other Sanofi insulin products (Lantus, Insuman) have been affected. Supplies of Apidra insulin vials continue to be available.

Very annoyed about this as the delivery method is the same for lantus as apidra can they not divert some of the machines making lantus solostar pens and clikstar cartridges to Apidra?

Marc

It would appear not Marc. They'll be losing revenue on lost production so I'm sure they'll be examining every option.🙂

The demand for Lantus will far outweigh Apidra. Millions use it around the world.

It may be an issue with the actual growing of that specific insulin as opposed to a packaging problem, hence the long wait before production starts.........

contamination maybe.............?

Well why is the insulin still produced in vials? I would like to know more on the problem first it was a production problem then a fire and back to a production problem.

Marc

I heard that the floor collapsed! It is really annoying, I am rather angry about it, thankfully I have a small amount from before and am going onto a pump soon which will solve the problem. Have you tried any of the alternatives Marc? If you have and they didn't work for you, you can write to them and put your case forward in the hope that they can give you some pens. There is a small supply but the priority is for under 16s and over 60s but they are making exceptions apparently. Will you be going onto syringes and vials for a bit if you can't get hold of any pens?

I should think you could conact Sanofi directly. They must have a PR department.

I would imagine a fire would take time to clear up and then get production back up and running. Sadly, I don't know all the ins and outs of insulin production but it must be quite a complex process.🙂

There is a patient advice line for apidra users I think
