Type 2
Hi all hope everyone is having a lovely Monday, i have a quick question
I am type 2, i managed at my first check up to do from hba1c 81 to 42 my second one was 50 - i was a bit lapse with my carbs but still fairly sensible blood sugar in the morning around 7.5 - 8.2 ( i no longer eat sugar except fruit and only 1 - 2 pieces a day if any). Then I got my latest Eye test result - showing some back ground retinopathy so i'm now tracking everything and keeping to 130g ( it was probably double that before) of carbs a day or below and my blood sugar is now 8.9 every day. so i not sure what i am doing wrong.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated, just wondering whether i should try to see my diabetic nurse or ride it out a bit longer

What is your blood sugar before bed? Is it going up overnight or staying flat?

Thanks Lucy i will check it before i go to bed tonight to see. i normally only check in the morning

Are you on any medication?

High levels after fasting may mean that your metabolism is struggling deal with the glucose generated by the liver to keep the levels topped up/provide energy. In the morning there's the 'dawn phenomenon' to deal with, which is a release of glucose due to natural hormone releases.

I noticed the same thing too when I was tracking my BG - I'm thinking it could have something to do with our cortisol levels? Two hours after my first meal, my BG was consistently lower than my fasting levels in the morning. I guess it could have been a post meal slump as well (although it didn't feel like it), but I know fasting can cause cortisol levels to rise as it puts stress on the body, which in turn can raise BG levels. I used to delay my first meal until mid-day to extend my fasting period before getting on the BG rollercoaster, but now I'm not at all sure if that is the right thing to do. A low carb breakfast as early as possible is probably a better idea. I'm still experimenting!
