I had my colonoscopy yesterday😱 (say no more); been diagnosed with diverticulotis - another condition associated with diet...

Now got to look at a high-fibre diet and reduce anything bitty ie nuts; seeds etc... Am going to find a dietician to work with - just glad it wasn't anything else more serious.

And for years I thought I had IBS (diagnosed at 15 years)

But not going to become obsessed or upset about it - life goes on...🙂

Hope all goes well withthe dietician. AT least you know what you are dealing with now, so I hope things improve for you.

I have diverticular disease and had to change my diet to include loads of fibre but do make sure you drink plenty of water otherwise you will suffer.

Have to say, symptoms have all but disappeared.

In the supermarket though when I was first diagnosed - took ages to do a small shop because every label had to be examined for fat, fibre, sugar, calories!!!

Luckily, I either passed out during the colonoscopy or because I was staying in hospital anyway, they did it deliberately. Came round in the recovery room as I was dreading having to be still for so long.

Sure you know the consequences of not increasing the fibre in your diet!

I hope it now goes well for you, my 11 yr old was diagnosed with IBS last year, after suffering for at least 2 years. Good luck with the diet. Sheena

Good luck with the diet Amanda. It sounds like Burgen bread is out then, if you have to avoid seeds etc.

Great to hear you now know what you are dealing with. All the best with the diet, and I hope you have a good dietician too - they will be important to how you get on, and I hope will be invaluable to you.

Glad things are working out and good luck with your new chapter 🙂

When I was discharged I wasn't given any information - just go home and increase your fibre. Only information is what I've read on the net and I don't want to scare myself to death with reading risks; consequeneces etc.. Can I ask how long you've been diagnosed; how long it took to get things under control; did you experience pain etc... Good to know there is someone in a similiar position to me. 🙂

I wonder if something like these fibres you can buy, Fybogel, would help, thus tasting better than bran and wouldn't interfere with your diet.

Hi Amanda, had it about 7 or 8 years I think, definitely before I was diagnosed with Diabetes so the consequences of starting on Metformin were not entirely new to me!!!

GP told me to drink 3.5 litres of water a day, tea did not count and I really struggled to manage that amount. Discovered had to drink as much as possible in the morning otherwise waking up and trotting through the night. Think I only managed the 3.5 litres a couple of times. However, on my last visit with the consultant, he said 2.5 litres and when I asked if tea counted, he said yes!! Whoohoo. Do still try and drink at least 2 litres of water though. It helps a lot.

Basic changes were wholemeal pasta, brown rice, brown bread, brown barmcakes etc. Big increase in vegetables. And just checking out everything for the fibre content. So much information all over the place it is sometimes confusing. Now at a stage where if the fibre content looks high enough, I go for that one. Can't remember what my 'baseline' figure was now. Backed off a little when I started with Slimming World as the fibre can be bulky but I can't back off too much as I just don't want that nagging pain. Losing over 3 stone has helped - at least in my opinion it has. I now eat much more fruit than I ever used to but that is to help cope with the diabetes and lose weight too.

It can be managed but I don't have diverticulosis which I think is a progression of the disease. My brother had diverticulitis which resulted in a colostomy - not good news but he could not drink that much water as he was on kidney dialysis!!! Lose-lose situation for him. Luckily, I have more control.

It is a 'background' condition to me now. If I remember anything else I have changed, I shall let you know.

Margaret
