Is anyone else feeling extremely hungry with the cold weather?

I have horrible hunger pains today & I think that's down to sleeping til lunch so sadly I didn't have my porridge for breakfast.

I'm having to sit on my hands so that I don't raid the fridge (the F1 needs to have some major incident to keep me gripped)

Yes... although my default condition is hungry, it's much worse when it's cold because the body has to spend a few more calories keeping warm. If you think about it, that's one of the reasons Arctic explorers eat such vast quantities of calorie-rich food (and the exercise, of course).

I'm the same today, having given up peanuts for a while (see my other thread). Just had a sugar-free jelly but it's not really suppressed my hunger much. Definitely colder in the house today, can't seem to get warm! :(

This time last year I was sat outside in T-shirt and shorts enjoying the hot sunshine! 😱

I can't get the house warm either northerner so am under my blanket (I don't like being cold)

*phew* I felt like a piglet with wanting to eat all the time. I've caved & eating some sweet & salty popcorn to see if helps with the hunger

Roll on tea time

In another thread that I created recently about my breakfast bolusl increasing by a factor two since Nov (http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=35950), someone suggested .."That's the sort of time of the year (when it gets colder) that many of us find that we need to increase our basal insulins".

So what is the reason that more basal is needed when it gets colder?

Have any of you experienced this?

Background I generally stay as I am (depending on night hypos, I may tweak)

Fast acting I need more in winter than summer (probably coz I like to sit on my backside in the cold than running about when it warm)

In hotter weather your veins and capilliaries expand allowing freer blood flow and I think for that reason you need less insulin generally.

I think it can be a bit like stress - some people it increases their BG and others it reduces it.

WE did have a thread on here quite a while ago where loads of us were saying what Patti just said, reduced insulin in hot weather and someone said 'I'm exactly the opposite'.

The only thing you can do is keep the same eye on it you always do (ie test !) and adjust insulin according to YOUR body.

I find warm drinks (sugar free of course) help. although at the moment I think my appetite is on holiday some place warm as I am right off food.
