Type 2
Hi everyone type 2 for 4 months now. Just on diet last review sugars 5.9 , and cholesterol 4.8 within normal ranges.

Two questions.

1. Why if everything is normal and GP said in a year even if the glucose intolerance level normal (which she thinks it will as just over border at 11.5) why do you still have to have the diabetic label?

2. Sorry folks I know going on.... cholesterol within normal range but GP said in September if not 4 then may need statins.

Does everyone who is type 2 have to have statins? Is it possible to get one below the average person?

A little disheartened as all hard work to loose two stone seems in long term
not to count.

Thanks for your help.

Its not a fore gone conclusion that EVERY type 2 will end up on statins, take my case I was on statins and injections but was taken off all meds middle of last year so some can be put on but then put in the hard work and you can come off them, it seems you losing 2 stone is the hard work on your part but afriad the diabetic label is a hard one to shake off, just embrace it dont fight it.Is it this September you have to wait to see if you go on statins? if so thats a good 6 month to knuckle down and get that CHO level to 4

Hi Senco1. I understand where you are coming from.

Can't answer the question on statins, although I believe the reasoning behind it is that people with diabetes are more at risk of hardening of the arteries therefore stroke/heart attack, so if cho levels are raised then statins are prescribed as a preventative measure.

Secondly, I have prediabetes, which means that my bg levels are raised but not considered high enough to give me a 'label' of Diabetic. However, 5.9 is considered high enough to be in the prediabetic range (according to my dr), and you have achieved that move down because of your lifestyle changes, weight loss etc. So very well done - that's a great achievement. But if you were to put on weight/return to normal eating then the figures would increase as diabetes does not go away, but can be controlled to a point by lifestyle changes (not always though. Some people require medication no matter how hard they try). As a prediabetic I prefer to label myself as a diabetic and live my life as if I were, because I acknowledge that, like others here, my pancreas does not function 'normally'. I too feel despondent and in a bit of a 'no mans land' at times. Sometimes I think it would be better to just be labelled a diabetic by my GP so that I would have a concrete diagnosis (if you know what I mean?)!

In the meantime the acceptance will come and if you continue to make the lifestyle adjustments that you have been making, then you will do really well I am sure.

I hope this helps! With best wishes. Katie

Type2 Diabetes doesn't go away because you have it under control. If you decide to eat a lot of carbohydrates and sugary products then your blood sugar levels will rise.
Statins are offered to people who cannot get their cholesterol levels to the recommendations of Nice Guidelines as it is important for us to prevent long term cardiovascular complications. Cholesterol levels vary throughout the population and some try and control it with cholesterol lowering foods. This will usually bring it down by roughly 10%. There are arguments for and against statins and you need to be well informed, research it well and then make your choice.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I myself don't think I will ever get acceptance of it.

Thanks for your help .

Recommendation on chols is under 5 for non-diabetics and under 4 for Diabetics. Clearly 4.8 is not under 4.
The 4 and 5 recommendations are based on Biermans's researches in the 1990s - heart disease significantly increased in non-diabetics over 5 TC and in diabetics (esp Type 2s) over 4.
But still those 4 and 5 targets are easy hurdles for most people to stumble through. Hunter Gatherers have Total Chols of between 2.5 and 3 and that would appear to be "normal" human levels.
