Hamburger chef Jamie Oliver has won his long-fought battle against one of the largest fast food chains in the world – McDonalds. After Oliver showed how McDonald’s hamburgers are made, the franchise finally announced that it will change its recipe, and yet there was barely a peep about this in the mainstream, corporate media.

Oliver repeatedly explained to the public, over several years – in documentaries, television shows and interviews – that the fatty parts of beef are “washed” in ammonium hydroxide and used in the filling of the burger. Before this process, according to the presenter, the food is deemed unfit for human consumption. According to the chef and hamburger enthusiast, Jamie Oliver, who has undertaken a war against the fast food industry, “Basically, we’re taking a product that would be sold in the cheapest way for dogs, and after this process, is being given to human beings.”

Go Jamie! 🙂

Important to read article to note which countries this change by McDonalds applies to to:
Yes in USA (where other fast food companies, Burger King and Taco Bell have already ceased using ammonium hydroxide extracted meat)
Not UK nor Ireland nor Latin America.

I always knew there was a good reason not to eat fast/junk food 😱

Hmmmm!!!! that is not good...as I love a macy dee's every once and again...really has made me think twice now...im sorter shocked as macy dee's would have been good beef?.....really am shocked!

Lets face it I am sure that there are folks on here that love macy dee's even if they do not admit it on here 😉

We have been known to indulge :D. Though I always bear in mind that just because they say it's 100% beef! there are an awful lot of parts to a cow! 😱

I must say it does sound pretty yucky hearing Jamie's description - I wonder if they will really change the recipe! 🙄

It's OK here - as mentioned earlier, the process is already banned in Europe. The article relates to Mcd's in the USA 🙂

But I think any processed food is likely to have components that are the most cheaply-manufactured they can come up with - remember all those Romanian horses? 😱

You leave em alone - my husband earned his money working for a company that makes the stainless steel kitchens and our son-in-law, his brother and one of my DSN's sons-in-law also, still work there!

And we have to go there occasionally on hols in France etc to use the wifi !

You're right! It could be 100% cow nostril! The Spanish'd love that - they don't waste any part of an animal, (which is commendable, but difficult for a dirty foreigner like me to stomach!).:D

Nowt wrong with eating all bits of an animal - what about sheep lights (lungs) in haggis or pork offal and offcuts in faggots?

The difference with the ammonium hydroxide method is using an unpleasant chemical to remove flesh from bones, rather than knives.

A vote of thanks to McDonalds in UK - I've used their free wi-fi many times. In fact, from late October to early December 2013, I wouldn't have been able to moderate or post without the McDonalds near to my new home, when I didn't yet have broadband installed.

I'm gonna nail my colours to the mast - I like Mcdonalds 😱

Don't have it very often though - but oh right now, I really want a cheeseburger and fries! :D

In the interests of fairness, I would like to point out that whilst the horsemeat did originate from Romania, when it left their factory it was clearly labelled as such.

The fault for it being labelled as beef lay elsewhere.

I also do not think that there was anything actually untoward about the meat either.

This was from my memory of events and, assuming wikipedia is correct, can be corroborated here ....
