just diagnosed and craving India Food and tasty food. Finding it so hard to find “Normal‘

Of course! Your grandson can eat normally but he needs to be aware of the carb amounts. He doesn’t need to eat low carb and that’s because he’s Type 1. Type 1s eat a normal diet but need to ‘be their own pancreas’. I don’t think you’ve explained his insulin regime yet, or whether he’s adjusting his mealtime insulin or is on fixed doses. This is important as he will need to bear that in mind.

the family are novices at the min but we are learning fast ! He has type 1 and has long lasting injection twice a day then every time he eats has more.
would love to have some mild curry recipes and other fake away. Need all the help we can get. Thank you all

@Susannemary Having a long-lasting insulin (basal) and a fast-acting insulin for meals is the usual thing for Type 1 🙂 What’s important to know is if he’s taking fixed doses of the mealtime insulin (ie the same amounts each day for each meal) or if he’s been shown how to adjust the amount he takes according to the carbs he’s about to eat.

@Susannemary Type 1s can eat a normal diet pretty much. That includes korma, fish and chips, roast dinner, etc etc. Type 1 isn’t about eating a special diet. It’s all about using the insulin correctly. If a Type 1 gets a ‘bad’ blood glucose result after a meal, it won’t be the fault of the meal, it will be that the insulin was wrong (wrong amount, wrong time, etc).

I don’t know only diagnosed last Thursday so will find out thank you

It might be a bit hit and miss at first, particularly if the food is bought at different places.
For a type 1 the trick is to match up the insulin and the food.
As a type 2 I know that the curry I make with chopped cauliflower instead of rice, and with nothing sugary or high carb in the sauce is about 30gm of carbs, but from a take away using standard but varying ingredients it could be many times that amount.
One of the dance sides I am with has recruited a type one and I have had to be really careful to emphasize that my cooking and food choices are low carb and along with the dancing that might be a problem for them if they assume that the carb content of what I take along is going to be 'industry standard' levels. They are brought by a parent and I had to step in to correct the estimate of 20 gm of carb for sausages was actually under 4 gm.
