Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I have type 2 diabetes. After years of being glucose intolerant and then having gestational diabetes in 2008, I have been a diagnosed type 2 since 2010. I was at first managing with diet, but now on medication. Metformin and another 'tranjenta'.

I have been suffering from chronic right hip pain since 2010, undergone various scans, but nothing obvious was picked up. My leg is markedly longer that side, so they put it down to that. As a last resort, the orthopaedic specialist gave me a steroid injection, it worked like a dream! Having another next week as pain is back :-(

I have an ongoing pain and swelling in my right ankle, after moving the duvet cover with my foot (lol), which was x-rayed back in October and not broken, had physio, but nothing worked and still suffering.

This morning I noticed a lump on the outside of my right knee joint, did some googling, saw GP and mentioned Bursitis and after examining my knee, said that was what it felt like. Sendng me for ultrasound. I have a feeling that I have bursitis in all of my right leg joints!

Have any other diabetics experienced bursitis?

Many Thanks for reading my essay,

Maz xx

Hi Maz, I have an inflamed bursa in my shoulder as a result of a bad shoulder injury. Bursitis can be very painful and like you I had a steroid injection which helped. Are you on any anti-inflammatories for it?

Hip and shoulder, both left side. Very painful, but steroid injection definitely helps with the pain. Still have stiff shoulder 5 years on though!

Hi, thanks for your replies. I have naproxen for my hip, but GP advised me to ice my knee. Is it common among diabetics? I'm only 35 :( xx

I had bursitis on my elbow very painful and swollen but it did go down after I rested it for a while. Hope yours gets better, I'd say rest as much as you can

I had burstis in my right hip no lumps though, I also have arthritis in my right knee. My chriopractor treated mine with ultrasound.

Not a diabetic but i've had recurring burstitis of the shoulder after a rather silly mountain bike accident. I was told i have shallow joints, so even slight inflammation creates problems. Could this be an issue for you? Only thing that has helped in the long term is a lot of physio and building up the supporting muscles to help take the brunt of the impact on my joints.

Either way, hope you get some relief soon!

I had trochanteric bursitis on the left hip for which I went to a physio. She was also a qualified acupuncture person. 2 months of fortnightly treatment and was fine - gradually improved til suddenly realised it had gone. By using her needles also found I had a back problem which led to my GP talking to her and him sending me to consultant for MRI scan which showed I needed the back operation which I had in May to screw and plate 4 vertebrae and carry out decompression. Was told could have gone at any time and probably paralised in 5 years so definitely believe in acupuncture now.

Hi, thank you for all your replies. Although bursitis isn't a nice thing to experience, it's nice to know how others have dealt with it and treated it.xx
