Good morning. My name is Tanta. I am not on medication but I have been type 2 diabetic for several years. I am in pain and discomfort with limited mobility have been referred for Right hip replacement. The surgeon has informed me that I must loose half my body size that is now 114k. I am 5'3. I love chocolates! I live alone and I am bored cooking the same ole, therefore looking for help with new ideas and approach to food, especially for breakfast. For example, I would like to try a simple carrot muffins recipe please. Basically I am here to learn so that I reduce the weight on joints and feel better about myself. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Hi and welcome from me too. I tend to have creamy Greek style natural yoghurt with berries and seeds for breakfast. The problem with muffins is the flour in them and any sugar if it is a sweet muffin. There are recipes which use almond or coconut flour in place of wheat flour which are lower carb and obviously sweetener in place of sugar. If you do a search for "keto muffins" on the internet, you should find plenty of recipes that you can adapt for carrot if you can't specifically find carrot muffins. I know some carrot recipes use dried fruit like sultanas so you would need to be wary of those as they are high carb too.
It sounds like perhaps you have a sweet tooth? I know I was certainly a chocoholic pre-diagnosis. It helped me to cut out all the sweet stuff initially for several weeks and then slowly reintroduce chocolate but in a different form ie dark 70%+ chocolate instead of milk and just have half a square with a spoonful of peanut butter and now I find that fulfills my need for a sweet treat and chocolate without setting away the cravings for more and more that I used to have. I also now enjoy and appreciate savoury, sour and bitter foods and flavours much more as my tastes have changed but the first step for me was to stop all the sweet stuff.
Good luck with your weight loss target and surgery. I imagine it must seem like a huge amount to lose but there are members here who have lost 4 and 5 stones in weight following a low carb way of eating and feel so much healthier as a result. I think the key is breaking it down into very small goals and acknowledging each small achievement and perhaps treating yourself but in a non food form. Getting out into the fresh air and doing a bit of walking will also help even if it is just 10 mins round the block if your mobility is limited or if that is too much, even seated exercised 2-3 times a day will all help. Something that gets your heart beating a bit faster and you breathing more deeply and perhaps a bit sweaty. Start low levels and gradually build it up. I am sure there will be you tube videos for people with limited mobility which show simple seated exercises you can do.

Thanks for responding, and with very positive and encouraging words. Yes,yes I will definitely take on board your suggestions about the 'keto' muffins. I have been eating all things so mouth has been going like a 'runaway' train.
The savoury and dark chocolate is going to be a challenge but definitely a must to achieving better health. I don't drink canned or fruit juices, neither use sugar in tea, but the sweet biscuits and chocolate are my sins, along with bread n better with mature cheddar cheese.J
ust signed up for zoom seated excercise 4days per wk, incl dancing and swimming on Thursday, however, not sure about the swim because the cold weather has started and I use a stick. Concern incase I slip on icy ground.
One of my biggest problems is understanding how to manage the carbs and work out the food labels. A goal is to increase the current 750ml water daily intake and keep a food dairy. In the past I lost 2lbs per wk when I counted calories, but then I get bored and Oops!
A food diary is something that we highly recommend as it can help you to see where you can trim carbs. There are phone apps to help you keep track of carbs and calories etc I know Nutracheck is one of them but there are others and I think some of them are free.... I think there may be a free trial with Nutracheck but then you have to pay. I just simply avoid high carb foods, so I don't eat bread, pasta, rice or potatoes (maybe once a fortnight I will have 3 small pieces of sweet potato or a couple of small pieces of normal potato) and once a month I might have a couple of dessert spoons of rice if my partner and I share a takeaway, but I have an extra veggie dish instead so some curried or stir fried veggies along with a share of his meat dish. I eat lots of cheese because it is low carb and eggs are great and so versatile and lots of olives and plain yoghurt.
It is great that you are signed up to an exercise program. I hope that goes well for you. Good luck. I believe @Felinia does pool exercise and finds that beneficial.
Hi and welcome
We are much the same age and I too have mobility issues, with crumbled discs, twisted hip and arthritis in my spine, knees and feet. My hip needs replacing, and I need to lose weight. I go to Aquafit 2 or 3 times a week and find that exercising in the water I am pain free and much fitter. It has worked wonders on my hip, and I have a lot more movement in it as well. I am lucky as I am able to drive to all 3 swimming pools in my area. There are several ladies who attend who walk with sticks, and one pool had a special disabled lift to get people in and out of the pool.
NutraCheck is £7.99 a month for the web version and app, and I think £5.99 for the app only. That's less than a cup of coffee a week in a coffee shop. As for fluids, I have about 6 pints a day - 3 of weak de-caf tea or coffee (6 half pint mugs) and 3 of mineral or soda water (6 half pint tumblers). I find soda water helps suppress my appetite. Downside is I wee for England but it certainly flushes the kidneys!
Best wishes

Hello and thanks for responding. I would have liked to attend the pool more frequently but managing my stick and backpack on the bus is not easy, however, I am encouraged to hear that regular swimming has reduce your pain. Definitely want improvement in my life and will have to put more effort in. Trying to increase the fluids with tea and water. Will add soda water. My kidneys will give Thanks and hopefully I will loose weight.
Speak soon.

@Tanta There are some recipes for making low carb crackers to have with cheese which are good, but I need to sit down by the stove so as to watch them like a hawk as they cook q u i t e s l o w ly and thentheyaredone.
I used Nordic walking poles quite a lot at one time, but always two of them, as I find that just one doesn't give the confidence and security of the pair, and I am pushed to stand upright and over time I got better so hardly need them at all now.
Low carb eating should make it easier to lose weight. The biggest weightloss I read about on low carb was estimated at 350lb - estimated as the person could not be weighed when they started out, so it can really work. I estimate my own loss at over 50lb as I stopped weighing myself at 264lb, which was about 6 months before diagnosis, but I was only trying to control my blood glucose, I never even thought about weightloss until my clothes began to slide south - luckily when I was at home.
I am still seeing changes - the waistbands of all my winter clothes were loose when I brought them out this year, again, so they all need adjustment or replacement. It is almost 5 years from my diagnosis now.
