Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I have been a type 1 for 39 years and like a low carb diet, but I suffer with awful gastritis and on a bland diet for it at the moment but this means no fibre n lots of white rice, bread etc. My bloods have been awful, does anybody else suffer with this and any help with what to eat ?
Many Thanks

Welcome @Lels3. I don’t want to be too personal but has this stomach complaint been going on for a while and what does it entail? EG, rushing to the loo straight after eating fatty food. What does your GP say? The reason I am asking is as you will know the pancreas produces digestive enzymes as well as insulin ( or not in our case) and as you have had diabetes quite a long time your pancreas just might have given up the ghost completely and not producing these enzymes. Again sorry if you think I am being too graphic, but is your poo greasy and very smelly? Have you lost weight? If so I think it’s time to go back to the doc as you may have steanerreh and may need Creon, these aren’t drugs but supplements. There’s a few of us on here who take them. @khskel @mikeyB @pottersusan for example. If none of the above applies and your problem is a recent temporary thing, unfortunately the BRAT diet ( banana, rice, apple sauce and toast) is the way forward until the bug is gone. Hope you get sorted as it’s a shame that your BGs are suffering because of your present diet. Any questions, fire away. Elaine.

not too personal at all ! I’ve had gastritis for 18 years and take Esomeprazole daily, basically I have had no other advice/ input from anybody since diagnosis, but life was getting so hard ( have Fibromyalgia too) I researched myself and found the bland diet is healing my stomach but as I sed not my blood sugars. I did’t need to rush to loo after greasy food and presently not having any fat. I just can’t have a lot of fibre which is obs in veg so I’m at a loss at what I can eat to bring down my blood sugars ? Thank you for your reply !

Poor you, my bowels give me more trouble than the diabetes! I can only suggest protein and a small amount of white rice, bread etc. Eggs, fish, meat, cheese, nuts etc. Do you carb count or on a fixed amount of insulin with meals because the only other option is more insulin with your meals to control your blood sugars. Would it be worth asking to be referred to a specialist or dietician maybe? Hope you get some answers. Elaine.

Poor you, my bowels give me more trouble than the diabetes! I.

I would go along with that. I have quite a collection of activities in my bathroom to entertain me, as I spend so much time in there🙄

I have assorted digestive problems too, and I seem to remember talking to someone else on here who had gastritis, but she was vegetarian, which made things more difficult. If you eat meat, fish, and eggs then I'd try to eat as much as possible of those along with smaller portions of the white rice and bread, and never have the white rice or bread without something in the way of protein or any fat you can tolerate to slow the carbs down. My Mum (who has diverticulitis, which requires a similar diet to yours) and I can both tolerate yogurt, it seems to be easier to digest than other fat - she eats a fairly plain Greek style yogurt every day. Mum can't eat leafy vegetables at all, but she can tolerate carrots and parsnips, so maybe small portions of those might be feasible for you - I know they're carby compared with other veg, but they're not very carby compared with white bread and rice. Boiled potatoes would be lower carb than white bread and rice too.

Thank you all for yr support and advice gonna have a try at eating even smaller portions even though I only hav 15 carbs per meal but I will increase my proteins to see if that helps once again thanx to u all !
