Hello All,

I've had a split big toe nail for almost a year now, and in that year the nail hasn't grown at all! However last night my nail got caught in the bed clothes and it has now torn all the way down and ripped right off 😱, any advice as to what would be the best way to deal with it would be greatly appreciated as it is incredibly sore,

thank you

Shirl

I'd ask for an urgent referral to your local podiatry service. You really don't want an infection.

Seconded! Please get it looked at asap.

Thanks for replies, unfortunately I don't have access to a podiatrist. Doc just looks at my feet at annual check up which isn't due until the new year! Will just have to ring doctors in the morning I guess. Hopefully I will be able to get in to see one of docs. will let you know how things go!

Good luck Shirl.

By the way, I'd be surprised if there were no podiatry service at all in your area. Here in Essex, they do not do standard diabetic foot checks (done by GPs) but they are available on referral. It's worth asking the question.

Well worth asking for referal.

At my last toe tickling I asked about pain in foot related to my bunion which got worse over the summer.

She referred me straight away I booked appt on-line using password given to me. Called choose & book.

Saw podiatrist for an initial assessment; she did the toe tickling again, but then used a machine which you could hear your foot make all sorts of noises (heart beat/.circulation). She confirmed I look after my feet very well had no concerns diabetes wise, but she thought pain was from me "walking funny" to keep pressure from bunion.

I have very small feet (size 3) so not keen to buy off peg insoles to correct alighnment without advice. She referred me on to see bio-mechanics as they may be able to make me some insoles.

Waiting for this appt which can take 12 weeks; so in Feb sometime; she did warn that when they correct way I walk bunion may become more painful so it could be I'm dealing with 2 foot issues. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen podiatrist.

Bunion certainly more painful in cold weather as well.

Hope your toe heals well. I understand some podiatrists can prescribe nowadays.

I had my bunions finally operated on almost 2 years ago. They were very pronounced and had become quite painful, enough to keep me awake at night. I am *so* glad I had them done! My feet are not painful any more and although I still need wide fitting shoes it's not such a problem as before. If your bunions become troublesome, have the operation 🙂 !
