Heyy, my names ayesha and im 23 years old diagnosed with type 1 diabetes although not officially as my documents say unspecified type but i do take 7-8units of lantus before bed. I have wet the bed on two occasions and feel completely embarrassed and im actually scared to talk to my doctor about it face to face because im so old. Its abit worrying as reading through this forum young children are experiencing bed wetting and considering im alot older is this normal? I checked my blood when it had happened and it was 4.3 so its not like it was extremely high which is more embarrasing. are there any adults that experience this? or could it be something else? thanks

Hi Ayesha, please don't be afraid to discuss this with your nurse or doctor, they are very used to hearing this sort of thing, and bed-wetting is not confined to children. There may be a very simple reason for it and your anxieties would be removed 🙂 It's possible that, although your levels were 4.3 at the time, this could have caused it as you may have been lower than that previously (your levels can rise and fall through the night as glucose is released by your liver at different rates). I often awake with the need to go to the loo and discover that my levels are low or actually hypo - it's not only high levels that can cause this response from your bladder.

However, it really is worth investigating as there may be a completely different cause that can be easily sorted out.

Absolutely it can be for many many reasons Ayesha, apart from Diabetes or being an infant! You absolutely MUST see your doctor - and please don't you dare be embarrassed even though it's hateful having to talk about any plumbing or sex-organ problems - for either sex. This won't be your problem of course - but eg prostate cancer can manifest itself with waterworks problems and because a lot of blokes ignore it - assuming wrongly that it's just a sign of creeping old age - far far too many men die of a cancer that is treatable if caught early enough.

Make that appointment asap please.

Hi Ayesha, please don't be embarrassed to talk to a doctor or a nurse about the problem, they really have heard and seen everything. Something similar happened to me in the early days after my diagnosis and it turned out I had a UTI, easily sorted with some pills.

Hi Ayesha,

If it was a one off, don't worry, but if it happens again, go and see your GP to rule out a urine infection etc.

Also, just because it's not talked about doesn't mean it doesn't happen to older kids and young adults. My lad was on holiday when he was 13, I'd gone in the room to check his BG level (about 1am) and he'd wet the bed - completely soaked. Hadn't had any bed wetting for 2-3 years before that, but had suffered from it intermittently since diagnosis aged 4, usually just a little leakage. It's often associated with having had very high BGs earlier in the day, not what they were at bedtime or overnight. Anyway, at 13 he was mortified, and agreed to ask his lovely consultant about it at next clinic. He reassured us that actually it can happen at all ages, and although embarrassing is no cause for concern if it's a one off. That particular occasion we'd been travelling all day and he'd been unfortunately running high teens (finally brought down to single figures before bed) but he was exhausted and just really deeply asleep. It hasn't happened since.

hey, thanks for the reassurance i may just ask my consultant about it at my next visit which is in couple months if i do have another one. This is actually my second time it happened as the first time was 2 months ago and was determined it to be my first and last time...

If it was a one off don't worry, if it happens on a regular basis then please do go see your doctor as it could be s sign of other things happening to you.

I suffer from stress incontinence (I pee when I cough or sneeze or laugh hard) and find things like tena lady pads and pants helpful. Also sleeping on a bath towel helps.

I hope things sort themselves out for you

What are your normal waking levels? Could you have had a hypo in your sleep which caused the bed wetting? Your liver would have kicked in and brought your levels back up. 4.3 is not much above hypo level. Did you test last time it happened and remember the result? It's maybe a good idea to set an alarm for 3-4am for a few nights and see what your levels are then.

I have been really bad at checking my BG levels when I wake up and generally during the day to be honest it's just mere laziness on my part but thank good last night was a dry night although I did have to get up and use the loo during the night (would have been interesting to see my BG at that point) but I will take your advice and check at about 3/4 am and see what it's like then

I have wet the bed regularly for the last 5 or 6 years. It was this that made me see the doctor and how I was diagnosed as being diabetic. I was assured that once my sugar levels were stabilised I would regain my bladder control. Sadly this wasn't the case. Following further tests I was diagnosed as having nerve damage which cannot be reversed. I have had to learn to live with this problem and wear adult nappies at night and large pads during the day.

Thanks for your response Steve, and sorry to hear about your situation.

This thread is rather old and I'm not sure the member who originally started it is still regularly reading threads here.

Thank you for your reply. It is what it is . I was just looking to see if incontinence and enuresis affected other diabetics. I am lucky really if being incontinent is the only problem my diabetes has caused I an cope with it. My Mother was incontinent, lost her legs and most of her sight.

Sorry to hear about your Mum @Steve Tanner, and sorry to hear about the nerve damage you sustained as a result of your diabetes.

Your positive attitude about it is quite inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

I can understand how you feel Ayesha but, as has been said, doctors and nurses are used to it. It would be a good idea to have it checked as they need to do something about it. Good luck. I hate going to the GP with anything "intimate" too.

It was due to becoming incontinent that I went to the Doctors and got checked out and found to have diabetes. My Doctor was very mater of fact about my incontinence and just refered me to a urologist. I never felt in the least embarrassed at being examined. The medical proffesion have seen it al and will not judge or make you feel uncomfortable.
