I'm having just one unfortunate side-effect of this low carb diet. I'm getting lots of fibre in the form or veg and nuts but ... around once every 4 days.:(

I've had a quick look on the net for info about All-bran and it's effects on BG but all I can find is someone telling me to take the grams of fibre away from the total carb content to get the 'digestible' carb figure. That seems wrong because I thought in the UK our labelling system had already done that so the quoted carb value is actually the digestible and BG raising amount.

Has anyone on here used All-bran and tested BG levels afterwards? What sort of rises were there? (I know we all react differently but if I'm going to try it I'd like to be prepared for any spikes)

Hi, I think you're right that our nutrition labels in the UK list only the digestible carb content, not the fibre part.

Can't help you with the effects, as (a) my son is type 1 and matches his carbs with insulin, and (b) there's no way I'd convince him to eat All Bran!! :D

Hia - I use all bran regularly. It does shift blood sugars up pretty quickly but after 2 hours my BSs are fine. I have a small bowl and use almond milk on it and it's 22g carbs (bit precise there!). I've tipped the last packet into a container but I'm almost certain it just gives normal total carbs value with and without milk.

I know this one...😎

I recently tried a well-known brand of All Bran (might even be the only one...begins with K?). Packet says a 30g portion with 125ml semi-skimmed milk is 26g carbs. I calculated that the milk was adding 6g carb.

I started with 25g with same milk and spiked by 2.4 mmol/L. Tried 20g with 100ml milk and spiked by 2.1.

Bought local store's own-brand Bran Flakes (less sugar than All Bran but looks and tastes exactly the same to me). Tried 25g with 60ml milk and spiked 1.7. Tried 20g with water and spiked 1.5 (not so good taste :( ) and settled finally on 20g with 50ml milk, which always spikes by 1.6 (worth it for the milk). About 20g carb including milk, so enough for me in one scoff event.

Depends on your starting level, I guess, what spike you will feel happy with. I measured the milk and weighed the flakes to get it right. 20 grams is surprisingly enough after a few days of it! 🙂

Thanks, everyone.

I'll try 20g with almond milk tomorrow and see what happens. It might be worth checking out the own-brand ones. If the store name begins with a T, I could be in luck!

Today is not the day for any experiments - out last night, ate early so we could get there, danced all night and got home dehydrated so it's a day for tried and tested food and very gentle handling!
