Hello All 🙂

Before i was diagnosed at xmas I would allow myself to have a bit of baileys.

Can i still do this or will it play havoc with my sugars??
Is there a similar alternative?

Thanks in advance!
Meg

The odd drink will do no harm at all. We all need treats. When I have a drink I try to make it part of my meal.

So If a pour a little in my coffee i wont cry at my next bg result?? lol

In the contest you are referring to its OK if your blood sugars aren't perfect...😉

Any sweet liqueur type drink will affect the blood sugar though, so moderation is the key for the rest of the year.....

You could have a regular spirit though with diet mixer and not have to worry, about increasing BG anyway.....🙂

Or if you really like you coffee to have that extra kick and still want to watch the sugar, add a good slug of proper brandy to the coffee with cream or milk (of course cream is nicer if you can afford the calories) and artificial sweetener to taste.

Might take a few attempts to get the proportions right... need any help?!

If you can test your BG levels with a meter try a before and after test to find out how you react. If you have sufficient test strips, a before, a 1hr and a 2hr test may be sufficient?

But, as others have said, just live a little every now and then. It won't do you any harm so long as you don't overdo it.

Andy 🙂

I find chilled dry white wine, such as Pino Grigio or Chardonnay, is practically 'invisible' to my BGs. In fact it lowers them while the old liver is dealing with the alcohol (I think, don't quote me on that).

Also gin and slimline tonic has same effect.

Hi, I did something about alcohol and diabetes in a thread about ?teens and diabetes? a few months ago. Maybe a moderator can post a link to the post. The advice I was given decades ago was to stick to fairly standard beers and red wine with the occasional wee dram of scotch. Liqueurs and fortified wines were a no-no! I have to admit that I have found dry cider and dry white wine have a similar effect on my BGs; not raising them but sometimes lowering them. I find, for instance, that if I have a couple of pints a (standard) packet of crisps balances everything up. The best thing as others have said is to try some and test to see how it affects you. Another thing to bear in mind is that Type II diabetics are often on quite a cocktail of tablets so it is worth checking the inserts, and asking your GP or pharmacist if uncertain.

If you're intending to drink just one or two tots of Bailey's over Christmas, then I'd just go for it. Sure, the sugar will raise your blood glucose levels, but it's Christmas.

However, for more sustainable drinking, I'd stick to moderate amounts of beer, wine or spirits (with or without sugar free mixers - unless it's good whisky, which should only be drunk with water 🙂)

I find dry white wine, red wine and spririts with diet mixers have little impact on BG if I take a bit of food with them through the evening to prevent middle of the night lows.

For beer - bitter/real ale/lager - I usually need to bolus around 1 unit per pint otherwise I just rise and rise from the carbs in it.

Thanks everyone. Stupid question now. Is rum ok or will my bg go up? Or is all of it really converted to alcohol?
