Well that's interesting.... I had never heard of them but it looks like they are based in the North east and having read the menu I now want to go! My birthday isn't until Feb so may have to find some other occasion to visit.

If you are looking at keeping it low carb, as I would, my choice would be fillet mignon with halloumi fries and ratatouille and maybe garlic mushrooms followed by creme brulee. Can't see profiteroles on the menu. Eaton mess might be an OK choice if you don't like creme brulee but ask if they can do it with berries rather than exotic fruits.

The chain is a posh version of Bernie Inns if you remember them, they get good and mediocre reviews as they are quite expensive. They seem to have taken over quite a few of the Harvesters. I know there is one in Coventry and one in Kidlington near Oxford.

Think I have heard of Berni's but I don't think there were any in this part of the world (North East). I have heard of Harvesters but I am guessing this is a new company just taking over their premises. I see there is one at Sunderland which is where my sister lives so I might have to try that. I am sure she and her husband would be up for eating out with me and since we haven't eaten out since my birthday last year (just before lockdown) and I very rarely eat out anyway, I can probably justify splashing out a bit. Maybe, it should be a post lockdown celebration! Will check the reviews first thanks.

Steak and salad, profiteroles are lowish carb for pudding.
Thank you

thank you, I will try your suggestion
I normally only go there on special occasions as it is a bit more expensive than the harvester
Thanks again

@K Macklin

What I should have asked first is "Are you on any medication??" If you are on mixed insulin or perhaps gliclazide then you would need to eat more carbs or risk going hypo, but if you are mostly diet and other oral meds, then what I have suggested would be best choice to prevent Blood Glucose (BG) upheaval. If you are not a dessert person, a cheese board is a good option for diabetics but go easy on the crackers and fruit. Of course any of the steaks would be fine, just the rare fillet mignon would be my choice. Salad and coleslaw is an equally good accompaniment but try to avoid the chips/mash/bread, carb rich stuff.

Having said all that, if it is a special occasion like your birthday you are allowed to be a bit naughty and spoil yourself as long as you get back on the straight and narrow the next day.

As regards alcohol, beer, lager and cider are quite high carb but a nice glass of red wine with your steak or a Gin and slimline tonic (not FeverTree) or other spirit with or without a diet mixer are pretty much carb free.... not that I am encouraging you to drink.... but having the knowledge to make informed choices can be helpful.

Enjoy and please report back on your experience as I will be interested to know if you had good food and service.

Miller a nd Carter are not new they have been her in Essex for a number of years.

Thanks - I am newly diagnosed, not on medication as of yet but have another blood test Monday & my first medical appointment with diabetic doctor 16th June but wanted to start myself on the right track & have changed my diet and eating habits for 2 weeks now & don’t want to ruin all my effort in one meal..

thanks, will let you know how I get on

Miller & Carter have been round Cov/Leics for at least 20 years, used to pass one on one of our fairly regular motorbike routes in the early noughties at a pub that had been there since my husband was a lad - and he's 73 now. My trouble is I don't know 'round here' to know what chain or otherwise any of the local establishments were formerly part of.

I'd go bonkers if I was served Eton Mess and it had any other fruit than raspberries in it. It would not BE Eton Mess - so it should not have that name!

It seems I really need to get out more!! Or perhaps M&C have just expanded into the north east here relatively recently.... Probably the former though. 🙄 Bit of a country bumpkin here!

I think they have been in Newcastle for about 5 years.
Not eating meat, I have never visited one but the reports from friends suggest the quality of their food can vary from one branch to another. But Trip Advisor can give you an idea what your local one is like.

@helli
Considering the last year and a half has been a write off for eating out, I am going to say that 5 years is pretty recent, so I sort of got one thing right. Nearest one is still 25 miles away and I rarely go into Sunderland anyway, except an occasional trip to the theatre in normal times. Will check out trip advisor thanks and then see if I still want to make the Chancellor happy and splash some cash!

So, I had scallops to start then steak with sautéed greens, lettuce wedge with no dressing and a grilled tomato, no dessert but had a gin and slimline & black coffee - really enjoyed it but do feel guilty but I think that’s because I’m newly diagnosed & not had consultation with my doctor yet ...

@K Macklin your dinner sounds lovely. I don't see anything to feel guilty about.
Take care of that guilt. I have seen it lead to eating disorders. I am not saying that is going to happen to you, just take care.

Thank you, I think I’m just overwhelmed by it all, I have an appointment with the diabetic doctor 16th June so hopefully we can form a plan and I’ll be a bit happier.. thank you for your support

Those look like excellent choices, nothing even remotely high carb so I there is absolutely no reason to feel guilty about enjoying such a meal. You should congratulate yourself on making those choices for your meal and lets face it a starter and main course are usually enough without a pudding.

@Leadinglights @helli
Thank you, last night when we got home I said to my husband that I couldn’t believe I enjoyed the meal without my “old favourite” trimmings and I knew I’d made good choices but this morning I am questioning myself, I’m glad I have joined the forum for peace of mind

Another "Well done!" here from me too. Great choices and fantastic that you enjoyed it. I think there may be an element in some of us in wanting to "punish ourselves for getting diabetes". It is part of the guilt and shame mentality at diagnosis, so we feel bad enjoying food even when we made good diabetic healthy choices.... It's like we don't feel we deserve to enjoy food anymore. I certainly think I went through that thought process and there was an element of punishing myself. The media is partly to blame for this and some HCPs who think that shaming their patient's is appropriate instead of being encouraging and supportive. Anyway, it's totally poppycock and very unhelpful, so if you have that deep dark thought lurking somewhere, ditch it and move forward to find the new healthy, happier you.

Just to clarify, a little bit of dressing on your salad isn't going to hurt if you choose wisely (I love balsamic vinegar with or without oil but oil is good) and creamy coleslaw is always included with my salads even at home.... I go through at least one large tub a fortnight (usually cheese coleslaw) as it is pretty low carb and bulks out a salad. It is one of the staples on my shopping list along with Creamy Greek natural yoghurt and double cream and lots of lovely cheeses and olives and peanut butter.... not all served together I should add!

@rebrascora thank you, I agree I am punishing myself although my eating habits were shocking so it has given me the kick I needed I think as I’m new I just overthinking. I’m very pleased at your suggestions, I’ll be adding them to my shopping list. Thanks again
