Hi

I was very thick yesterday lunchtime I wanted a corn on the cob looked at the packaging only information on there was per 100g the carb count is 19.4g it didn't state anywhere on the packaging how much one or both of the cob's weighed  so I thought right well I can weigh it can't I. So that's what I did it came out to just under 400g for both so I injected for 200g😱 because I only wanted one- so so stupid I ended up going from one hypo to another all afternoon and didn't realise why until my husband got home and I told him about it. He said well you don't eat the middle do you which is most of the weight so you injected for carb's that weren't there! I ended up having a hypo in the night too so I'm feeling pretty rough today.

Question is how can I find out the carb's in one cob because it's definately not on the packaging and I looked at the website of the store to see detailed information about the product it just says the same thing

o dear - we've all done it 😉

hope you are feeling better now

My carbs and cals app says a 170g Corn on the Cob would be 20g of carbs - reckon thats about 12g per 100g - the pic looks like an average size one. the mini ones my daughter has are 10g in total according to the app, and i have used this figure several times for her so assume they are correct?

If you dont have the app or book i really recommend it as a visual guide when you cant weigh things

Only thing I can suggest is you take the corn off the cob and weigh it, then use in a.n. other dish.
You'd only need to do this once then you'll have a rough guide for next time.

I love corn on the cob & not something I would have thought of either. Will now though 🙂

Sarah (Robs O/H - he knows I'm here honest 😛)

Think mean mums about right I would do it like that.
In thecollins gem GI book and the Callorie counter it says
1 medium cob Carb 22.4 so I would go of that if I was having 1 hope it helps.

Thank you meanmom that's brilliant I'll try that 🙂

I learned that corn like beans etc are very low GI, so depending on the amount I wouldn't even consider them, unless it was a full tin or like your situation 1 or 2 cobs, where I would take it as 10g/1CP........

Yep totally and utterly recommend carbs and cals, it is a fantastic tool. We have it on my iphone and Jessica's Itouch and the book as well.

Thank you everyone for your help, I still feel silly for injecting so much I knew it wasn't quite right at the time at least it's taught me a lesson 🙂

I've got a really simple phone I don't like the touch screen phones (I sound much older than I actually am saying that) but I might look into one of the book's I tend to try guess work when I'm not sure about weight etc which doesn't always turn out so well. Thank you Adrienne.

Emmal the Collins Calorie Counter I think is better than the Carb counter it has both in and has been a god send to me I have just got the GI book ans its ok but the Calorie 1 is great

Excuse me but... corn on the cob is not digested. Corn just goes straight through you. Ever seen it? I have never trusted corn as a food to be able to inject an amount of insulin for, so avoid it.

It likely there some goodness taken from it, but as I say its very small and very slow, to slow for the likes of novorapid and others, that's why I don't take anything unless its a full tin......

The first time I had corn on the cob I didn't inject and ended up in double figures so I know I need to inject for them.

Shame to avoid anything if you like it - my daughter has corn in some form or other nearly everyday as it is one of her favourites - and we always count it - although perhaps only one unit (like I said the mini corn cobs are 10g of carbs - thats 2 units on her current ratio) If she wasnt getting the carbs surely she would be going low?

Dont worry about the Carbs and cals app - but try to get the book or at least have a look at this link (and dont pay the full price - I got my cheaper at 'another online store')

http://www.carbsandcals.com/Book.aspx

Here you go, the book at cheap price :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Carbs-Cals-...3052/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297940498&sr=8-1

I find the Carbs and Cals much more accurate (except for the bread) than the Collins Carb counter. There is a lot wrong in the Collins book that is unhelpful.

ie a medium banana !!!! a medium banana can be different to different people so extremely unhelpful.

Here is another good and very cheap one (can get used copy for 1p):

Added "corn on the cob" to the thread title to make it more explicit. Moving to Food section.
