Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I live on my own (not counting the cat). I do not have an oven but I have lots of kitchen top appliances - Air Cooker, Microwave, omellete maker, egg boiler, toaster, slow cooker, pizza maker, soup maker, tefal actifry, and various sandwich makers and grilling machines. I do not like cooking meals, and the ones I do have are normally at outdoor eating places. I prefer to live on snacks and would like to stuff my fridge with nothing but 'diabetic type snacks'. I do not knowingly use sugar, I use skimmed milk, I do not use salt. I dance every evening and believe this is a happy balance for my exercise needs. Does anyone know of a list of diabetic snacks that I can use as the basis for filling my fridge. I really do not want the hassle of wondering whether or not I can eat the food - I much prefer to open a packet or whatever, make a brew and that is me satisfied until I feel hungry again. By the way, I always feel hungry when I return from an evening dancing - any ideas on what I should finish the day with that does not give me a blood sugar reading of between 9 and 10 the morning after.

From One lazy man who is trying to make his life a little lazier!!

First question: if your morning BG is regularly between 9 and 10, what is it late at night, or at other times.
(I will suggest low carb options later...)🙂

Because my life style is unusual - On average I go to bed at 2 a.m. and sleep until lunchtime, I tend to take a BG reading only once a day (whenever I get out of bed, whatever time that maybe, but before I eat anything. Sometimes I am awake all night and sleep from 7 or 8 in the morning until mid afternoon. I do not take BG readings at any other times.

Not far away from the sort of hours I do, one thing comes to mind by testing once a day is not helpful in identifying whats happening. I do test when I wake up in the morning as that does give me a base level to start the day off.

Ideally it's test before a meal and then 2 hours after a meal, in that way by making a note of what you have eaten and what your pre and after meal levels are you can build up a pattern of what food does and in what way. Bananas are an example some can not eat them at all while myself can only eat them as they are turning yellow, otherwise my levels rocket up.

I am not the best with what foods to snack on are, and others will be able to say a lot more than I can about them.

Hello Pav

Thanks for you help. Your 'process of elimination' on before and two hours after BG readings seems to be a good idea and I will give it a try.

As snacks, most nuts such as Brazil nuts, walnuts, pecans, redskin peanuts are unlikely to raise BGs much. Cheese, cottage cheese on Ryvita is also usually safe. Avocado on Burgen bread toast... Many more options according to personal tastes.
I am sure others will have suggestions.

Hello Blue

Thanks for your suggestions. I have started a listing of options to eat and yours have pride of place.

Hi Edgar, welcome to the forum, dancing every evening seems great exercise 🙂

Hello to Edgar.

Air Cooker, Microwave, omellete maker, egg boiler, toaster, slow cooker, pizza maker, soup maker, tefal actifry, and various sandwich makers and grilling machines.
LOL it'd be easier to just get a decent cooker! :D Hello and welcome to the board Edgar. Kudos on the dancing, I bet you're much in demand with the ladies. Can't you lure one back permanent and get her to look after you? Somebody needs to be looking out for your health if it's not you. :D Snacks are no good imho. Skimmed milk is rubbish. They used to chuck it away back in the day. You couldn't say the word to my old Irish Da, he'd go off on one, he used to swill it down the farm drains.

Hello Ditto
A cooker I can do without. Same answer to getting a dancing partner as a permanant fixture. I prefer to dance with ladies and share myself around them. My home is my castle and after my second divorce some thirty years ago, I decided another marriage was not for me. At the time I did wonder about sex, but diabetes and heart problems combined to take care of that situation. Edgar by name; E.D. by fate. Sometimes it helps, when dancing closely, not to be able to get an erection (if you know what I mean!!). As you can tell I have lost everything but not my sense of humour. 😉 The cat likes a nice cuddle now and then and I am satisfied with that scenario. Got to go now, get ready for dancing.
ps. Please do take offence at anything I have written - it is meant to be light hearted and hopefully you will laugh.

Do you have a Lidl close enough to be convenient? They do protein rolls which most diabetics seem to tolerate well.
Packs of sliced cooked meats, packs of prepared salad, creamy coleslaw, sticks of celery, courgettes, leeks or onions - beef burgers chops steaks mushrooms tomatoes - having that sort of thing in fridge or freezer means a ready supply to improvise with. I have a hot air fryer and toss in a pack of chicken thighs for 45 minutes (it is about a kilo) When done allow to drain and then cool on kitchen towel - those you don't eat at once after smelling them for about half an hour. The crispy skins evaporate during cooling, at least they do in my kitchen. Mushrooms cooked for a few minutes in the juice left behind are great as well - you need fairly small closed cup ones so they roll rather than get crushed.

Hello Drummer
Thank you for your comments and help. I have added them to my 'food notes' and intend to have a look at Atkins.
Take care and best wishes.
Edgar

Do you use those bags that you can put chicken, fish, veg in and pop them in the microwave, cooks things quickly without the need for oil. I used to use them a lot, but need to buy more.

I did. :D

Hello Edgar and welcome to the forum. Yogurt is filling and easy if you like it and there are some pleasant low and no added sugar ones around such as yeo valley and a diet one from Ireland obtainable at Sainsburys, I am also a fan of cheese and like the cheddar flavour baby bel. If you like avocado and also prawns they are pretty good too. Personally I hate low fat stuff and it is usually high in carbs and I drink lactose free milk in tea etc or full fat milk. Oat cakes are good too. Nuts are a great favourite with me as well and very filling. Hope you find lots of nice things 🙂
