Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Type 2 for last 25 years, currently on insulin, humalog 16 units 3 times per day, and Toujeo 50 units at night. Last 3 months had serious health issues related to diabetes, foot ulcers on both heels, though right heel ulcer now healed, but left foot still bad which has caused me to have sepsis and osteomylitus (excuse spelling of last word). Sepsis was severe as it was related to bacterial infection from foot ulcer. Damage done, i have lost half of bone structure of heel bone, and recently finished i.v. antibiotic through PICC line to try treat infection. Hopefully will get results this week to see if infection better. Still have to observe non weight bearing on foot.
Other co-morbidities are COPD, Heart failure, Water retention and Severe Periphial Disease in both legs.
Ithought i would join this for support and info from other users, overall, i felt my diabetes was well managed over the years, but i was wrong, so reading other peoples posts will help me to look after myself better. Hopefully ive not been too boring, so hello everyone.

Hello Pip (?),

I feel for you. I have been Type I since childhood. Although I controlled it as best I could - there were no BG meters when I was diagnosed just inaccurate urine tests and needles you had to resharpen. Over a decade ago I was diagnosed with PAD (the DSN had said my pulses were fine 6 weeks earlier). In 2020 I developed an ulcer which ultimately lead to a BKA.

If you want to know anything just ask. All I can say is manage your diabetes as best you can, listen to the doctors and good luck! There are always people hear to listen...

Thanks Mike, the question mark next to my name. my name is Phil, and Pip is a nickname for that!. Thanks for your support and good health to you.

Hi Pip,

I assume you are on meds for your PAD? The standard seems to be a statin to try and avoid further narrowing and aspirin to prevent a clot. Some vascular surgeons prefer Clopridgrel to aspirin. Watch out for angina as CVD and PAD seem to accompany each other in the presence of diabetes and/or smoking.

All the best, Mike

Welcome to the forum @pip294

You have certainly been through the mill. Do ask any questions that you have, as there is loads of experience to tap into on here. Nothing is considered silly. Just ask.

Welcome to the forum @pip294

Sorry to hear what a rough ride you have been having. Thanks for sharing it with us

We have all sorts of members with different durations and experiences of diabetes on the forum. Some who are living with additional complications and challenges connected to a long duration of diabetes, and others who are just starting out on their journey.

Hope you find it helpful and encouraging to compare notes with others, or simply to have understanding ears. We instictively ‘get it’ and know how fickle, unfair, and contrary diabetes can be. 🙂

Fire away with any questions, and look forward to hearing more of your experiences and insights over the coming months. 🙂

Hi @pip294, thank you for sharing a bit of your story it looks like you have had a challenging time. Hopefully through this forum your able to see other people's experiences and how they manage their diabetes! 🙂

Hi and welcome @pip294 glad you've joined us 🙂

Sorry to hear what a tough time you've been having and I hope things are starting to stabilise for you.

It is a really long haul with infected foot ulcers and osteomyelitis, I had a recurrent heel ulcer that took years to mend after many IV antibiotics and numerous skin grafts & developed osteomyelitis that needed bone and tissue debridement. I also developed Charcot foot where all the bones in my foot and ankle collapsed. It is a really worrying, painful chronic problem and the skin graft is always the first area to start to break down again.

Are you in a boot or a cast at present or managing on crutches? I hope you're able to access podiatry services in your area and are getting good care to protect the vulnerable areas. Wishing you well.
